The LDES Council is pleased to see states like New York helping to advance LDES deployments, aligning with their target of 6GW energy storage by 2030. Supported by a $5 million investment, New York State's "Renewable Optimization and Energy Storage Innovation Program" is the latest signal that #LDES is being embraced as a powerful #decarbonization and grid flexibility solution. New York’s solicitation will foster clean energy #innovation, including for LDES deployment, and is projected to reduce future statewide electric system costs by nearly $2 billion and help eliminate the state's most polluting fossil fuel power plants. As energy grids increasingly rely on variable wind and solar PV, the need for longer duration energy storage solutions will grow. The LDES Council is excited to continue these discussions at the Australian Clean Energy Summit 2024, which will be held July 16-17 in Sydney. Julia Souder, along with several LDES Council members, will attend this event, which will bring together policymakers, investors, and leaders driving Australia's energy transformation. In New South Wales, LDES technologies are becoming integral to the state's energy system. As the state prepares to phase out its remaining coal-fired power stations over the next decade, the NSW government seeks a gigawatt of long duration storage, equating to at least eight gigawatt hours. Members Eos Energy Enterprises, Inc., ESS, Inc., and Invinity Energy Systems are testing long duration energy storage applications for the U.S. military and Native American lands, enhancing energy resiliency through microgrids. For outage-prone tribal communities, the California Energy Commission (CEC) and Indian Energy LLC are collaborating to learn as much as possible about #LDES through various grants. Through a $4.85 million agreement, the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar's Rapid Integration and Commercialization Unit (RICU) is working with ESS to implement their Iron Flow Battery Energy Storage System, which will provide sustainable power to Native communities across California and the US. The RICU is a living laboratory for integrating advanced LDES technologies into utility-scale microgrids. Additionally, the RICU is testing EOS's zinc-based Znyth battery for use in a hospital microgrid in Ontario, California, enhancing #renewable energy use and reducing diesel dependence. The CEC recently funded 18 Invinity vanadium flow batteries at the Rincon Reservation near Valley Center, California, providing 4 MWh capacity. These batteries enable the microgrid to operate independently for up to 10 hours, lowering the reservation's monthly demand charges. The #Time4Action is now to ensure #3xRenewables by 2030. Member Rondo Energy has secured contracts at industrial sites across the U.S. and Europe to deliver cost-effective, #renewable energy sourced thermal energy storage solutions that aligns with its goal of helping to reduce global CO2 emissions by 15% over the next 15 years.   Utilizing thermal energy storage, Rondo’s heat battery combines century-old materials with advanced automation using brick batteries that store excess #renewable energy as heat providing continuous uninterrupted power. Compatible with 90 percent of industrial processes and energy needs, the heat batteries can be installed in existing facilities and configured to customers’ specifications, empowering customers to operate with zero-carbon #energy.    Rondo recently secured a €75M commitment from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, the European Commission, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to deploy three thermal energy storage battery systems across Europe. Additionally, through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Rondo has secured up to $75M to electrify production sites in Kentucky and Illinois, targeting carbon neutrality by 2026 and 2028.    These initiatives follow a $60M investment round last year, supported by Anchor Member Rio Tinto and other industrial organizations, to accelerate the global deployment of Rondo’s solutions. Member ENGIE has begun constructing a 200MW/800MWh #battery energy storage system (BESS) in Vilvoorde, Belgium, marking one of Europe’s largest BESS projects.    Covering 3.5 hectares, the installation will comprise 320 battery modules capable of powering 96,000 households. The initiative is part of Engie’s extensive 3.6GW pipeline of BESS projects aimed at boosting grid flexibility and reliability.    This latest endeavor highlights Belgium’s dedication to advancing #LDES solutions supporting global #decarbonization and #renewable targets. Engie is accelerating its energy storage operations to complement its pumped storage fleet, and has an ambitious target of 10 GW of battery capacity by 2030, mainly in Europe and the US. Member Redflow has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Stanwell Corporation Limited, a Queensland government-owned electricity provider, to accelerate the state's renewable energy targets. The companies will collaborate on the development and deployment of Redflow's new X10 battery solution, intended for a large-scale project of up to 400 MWh. This initiative will serve as a potential anchor order for Redflow's planned manufacturing facility in Queensland. Aligning with the Queensland State Government and Australian Federal Government's #battery strategies, Redflow's zinc-bromine flow batteries have a long cycle life and are particularly suited for large-scale systems. Both governments' strategies underscore the essential role of #LDES in advancing the nation's #renewables industry and achieving #decarbonization goals. Julia Souder and Gabriel Murtaugh had an eventful and exciting week in India, participating in several events and convenings in New Delhi.   Our conversations reinforced our belief that the opportunity #LDES technologies can play in supporting India’s #decarbonization goals is increasingly being recognised. The LDES Council has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) and its Center for Net-Zero Energy Transition (C-NET) to advance long duration energy storage solutions in Gujarat, a western state of India. GUVNL is a state electricity regulation board that collaborates closely with its subsidiaries to facilitate the development of Gujarat's power sector and uphold reliable electricity services state-wide. Julia Souder, CEO of the LDES Council, and Sourav Nandi, CFM of GUVNL, signed the MOU in the presence of Kanubhai Desai, Gujarat Minister of Energy, and Jai Prakash Shivahare, IAS, Managing Director of GUVNL. “This paves the way for a comprehensive assessment of long duration energy storage solutions, crucial for ensuring grid stability and enabling large-scale integration of renewable energy sources,”  GUVNL said in a statement. With India’s vision of net-zero emissions by 2070, GUVNL has established the C-NET think tank. Through comprehensive planning, it aims to achieve #netzero by 2047. This initiative sets the stage for #LDES in the region, ensuring grid stability and #renewables to enhance the country’s #decarbonization efforts. Congratulations to member Eos Energy Enterprises, Inc. on the successful commercial launch of its state-of-the-art manufacturing line in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania!   The line will ramp up to 1.25 GWh of annualized manufacturing capacity over the next six months, with the ability to expand to 2 GWh for the company’s zinc-based #LDES systems. When producing at scale, Eos forecasts production costs to drop by nearly half.   “The first fully commissioned line along with the recent Cerberus investment are clear signals to the market that we have the resources and capabilities to produce Z3 storage systems in the United States for large scale customer projects” said EOS Chief Executive Officer Joe Mastrangelo.   The announcement follows the recent news of an up to $315.5 million strategic investment from the investment firm Cerberus.
