As we continue to celebrate Pride Month, we reached out to Chamber Board Secretary Edsel D'souza for his reflections on being a business leader and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and for advice on ways Chamber members can support the LGBTQIA+ Community. Reflections on Pride Month from Chamber Board Secretary, Edsel D'souza, Citrust Insurance: "I love Pride month as it is truly a celebration of the advancement of equality for us all. As an immigrant and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I clearly recognize the platform I have created for myself as a small business owner, and trust me, I do not take it lightly. Over the years, I continue to see the growth and acceptance among us as all. But to strive to create opportunities for everyone is a continuous process. Though health and business insurance is required by everyone, I am grateful to say that I have been able to grow my business successfully with individuals, families, and businesses regardless of gender, race and identity. However, if there is one opportunity to grow, it is visibility with businesses of all sizes. As an LGBTQ+ person of color who owns their own business, I want to create a space where we are all looked upon equally i.e. by the services we provide. During Pride month, I try to find ways to get involved in my community events. This year, as an independent Medicare broker, I volunteered my time at the West Hollywood Pride Festival educating festival goers on Medicare products, and also talked to many young people on the importance of getting coverage. It truly was an enlightening experience as I realized that many people are not aware of their options and benefits. To everyone else who wants to know how to support the community. My tip is simple. Just SHOW UP… in person!
