As we near the end of the school year, we are delighted to witness many students at The Westbrook Academy receive college acceptances and plan their life after high school. However, as post-high school planning approaches, it often brings concerns about post secondary finances and affordability. Every year, LA Promise Fund's Young Professional Council (YPC), a group of individuals committed to empowering youth, (Courtney A. Paul Mike Butler Desiree Flores Samantha Scott Lynn Kha Bryant Lee Diana B. Simmons) dedicate their energy and efforts to break down obstacles for youth, champion students' interests, and open doors to new opportunities. Today, we're honored to spotlight Renata Simril, President & CEO of the LA84 Foundation as part of Women's History Month!   A tremendous thank you to @la84foundation for their support in the LA Promise Fund mission of supporting students in college, career and life.   When asked what education means to her, Renata beautifully shares, "Education means opportunity and it is still the great equalizer. College helped a country girl from Carson find an extraordinary career of leadership, service and impact. In whatever we choose to focus on, it enriches our thinking, how we understand ourselves, our experiences and our relationships. I believe education can animate every part of life, including joy, respect, compassion and service to others. Along with academics, sport played a significant role in my education. We want to take a moment to share a former student from our 2023 The Intern Project initiative, Minji, as she shares her journey and growth: ‘Before I joined the program, I felt like I did not have any professional development such as how to correctly write a resume or even about LinkedIn. I felt super anxious whenever I had interviews and had a hard time making connections in the field that I was interested in which was marketing. Since a lot of marketing internships are for college students and older, it was hard for me to find companies that gave opportunities to High Schoolers.” Once Minji joined TIP and participated in their Spring Cohort and Summer Internship Program, she had a new outlook. “I have learned a lot more about the marketing field and the thought process I should have to have a successful interview. Instead of looking at interviews as interrogation, I now look at it as a conversation to get to know someone. Now, I find interviews fun and see a big change in my confidence in doing them.’ Minji’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship to support youth looking to career opportunities and their dreams!
