🌏 Happy #WorldMangrovesDay! In celebration, Global Mangrove Alliance released their 2024 "The State of the World's Mangroves" Report. 📑 A collaboration of over 100 authors from around the world, the report features powerful new science solidifying the role of mangroves as natural climate solutions, and confirming their importance to coastal communities and biodiversity. Landesa's work in Indonesia was featured for its partnership with Nagekeo Regency to protect 650 hectares of mangroves through enhanced community tenure, underscoring their crucial economic and ecological benefits. Living in India, I am amazed by how smart, turly innovative and diligent people are here in Bengaluru, the IT Capital. As I travel to the rural areas of our country and see the plight of farmers, especially women, who experience dire poverty, I realize that they too are resilient, entrepreneurial and incredibly intelligent. What is lacking is equal opportunity. Landlessness is a better predictor of poverty, in India, than illiteracy or membership in a scheduled caste or tribe. Secure Land rights is the great equalizer. With Landesa's help, these women have taken their opportunity and capitalized on it! Landesa promotes land literacy training and then porvides a few select women with training on land records and computers. These women then set up Land Consultancy Centers, called Sangha Centers. Landesa now has over 100 of these centers all over West Bengal. These women are not only providing remote villagers with easy, affordable, access to their land records but earning 1/4 to 1/3 of their family incomes! Widows across Africa face immense challenges due to patriarchal norms, including the lack of land rights, which impacts their socio-economic well-being and empowerment. Empowering widows through land rights is crucial for gender equality and sustainable development. Dr Monica Mhoja, Landesa Outreach Director - Africa, said that "...Women fill a vital role in both agriculture and in household food production. Yet, women, widows included, often lack rights to land." My-Lan started working for Landesa in 2008 and re-joined our team in 2011. 💬 What brought you to Landesa? "My mother and father. My mom grew up in Vietnam under the hardships posed by the Vietnam War (or the American War in Vietnam). After studying the roots of conflict, poverty, and inequality at University of California, Berkeley, I was keen to contribute to practical solutions.
