About us

Since 1990, La Maestra has been dedicated to its mission: to provide quality health care and education; to improve the overall wellbeing of the family; bringing the under-served, ethnically diverse communities into the mainstream of our society through a caring, effective, culturally and linguistically competent manner, respecting the dignity of all patients. La Maestra was founded with one volunteer physician and has grown into a PCMH-3-accredited Federally Qualified Health Center with locations in emerging communities throughout San Diego County. Over 500 staff and volunteers guide over 46,000 patients per year to access healthcare and social services, most of whom are special populations with complex health and wellbeing needs. The La Maestra Circle of Care™ is a holistic, solution-based approach to addressing the health and wellbeing needs of diverse emerging communities, because complete wellness requires more than just a trip to the doctor. For a patient and family to be healthy, they must have barrier-free access to integrated services including nutritious food, safe affordable housing, employment and education opportunities, and programs that promote wellbeing and healing. La Maestra offers a comprehensive range of culturally and linguistically-appropriate services including prevention, treatment, chronic disease management and essential support services to immigrant and refugee, low income, homeless, uninsured and underinsured patients. Healthcare services include primary care, pediatrics, geriatrics, women’s health, laboratory, digital radiology (ultrasound, x-ray, CT, Dexa, mammography), telehealth, pharmacy, dental, vision and behavioral health. Integrated enabling and social services include transportation, interpretation (staff speak 30 languages), help applying for health coverage and assistance programs, health education and outreach, economic empowerment, healing arts and a range of services provided by La Maestra Foundation.
