A great neighborhood deserves a great theater.

About us

The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is a unique and vibrant community performance arts center located in the heart of East Liberty, one of Pittsburgh’s most historic neighborhoods. We encourage diverse, inclusive and high quality, artistic, cultural and educational activities. The Kelly Strayhorn contributes to cultural understanding, quality of life, as well as economic development in community, county, city and region. The theater offers original and eclectic programming year-round.   The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is more than bricks and mortar; it is a living testament to the drive and creativity of true American originals. To enter the theater is to be in the presence of two creative and passionate spirits, who with their talent, tenacity, and love of their craft provide inspiration for us today: famed dancer and Hollywood movie legend Gene Kelly, born and raised in East Liberty and Homewood-bred jazz composer Billy Strayhorn. Their spirits abound in the young East End artists of today. The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is an intimate, professionally-equipped, 350-seat multiple-use performance venue. With a commitment to support the burgeoning arts community in the city of Pittsburgh, the theater serves as an ideal place for emerging local artists, regional artists and arts organizations to take risks and present new work.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of stepping into a captivating world of immersive performance and dance at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater House Party, sponsored by UPMC & UPMC Health Plan. KST’s annual summer benefit delivered a night of fun, dance, and entertainment, from the neon-noir VIP Reception to the lively Dance Party. Congratulations to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater for another outstanding event that honors the legacy of Gene Kelly and Billy Strayhorn while celebrating the diversity of voice, expression, and experience. • We are absolutely thrilled to share the news that KST is adopting a co-leadership model! Former Deputy Director Melanie Paglia now joins Executive Director Joseph Hall as Co-Executive Directors. “I often envisioned a co-leadership structure for KST. When I was with BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, which has had a co-leadership structure since the 90s, I participated in a rich relationship where we collaborated, supported each other, and led the organization to great accomplishments. Melanie and I enable each other to lean into our strengths and achieve the best outcomes for KST’s communities. Melanie has been critical to our ability to thrive during such a complicated period for the arts. Her operations expertise and caring approach to leadership have been indispensable to our success so far. As she joins me in leading KST, I look forward to sharing this vision and ensuring that we continue to model excellence, joy, and innovation in our partnership.” - Joseph Hall. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Melanie as she steps into this pivotal role, and let's embark on this exciting journey together!
