📖 This week, the New York Times shed light on the 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 in our country, which continues to get worse with increased teacher absences since the pandemic.  Schools nationwide are grappling with the challenge of finding qualified substitutes, leading to disruptions for students and educators. At Kokua, we've always championed the invaluable role of substitutes in our communities. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the pandemic amplify challenges in our education system. Among the complexities, here are 3 things we know for sure: ✅ Students have lost precious learning time.   ✅ Teachers deserve guilt-free days off to prioritize their well-being. ✅ School leaders are facing unprecedented turnover and burnout. We’ve seen firsthand the power of a qualified substitute – 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟗𝟗% 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟕𝟓𝟎𝐤 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫. To kick things off, we’re honored to introduce you to Lindsey, a Chicago native and professional artist who (unexpectedly) launched his education career in 2006. By creating meaningful connections and adding representation as a Black male educator, Lindsey’s impact as a role model extends far beyond the walls of his classroom.  🗣️ Lindsey shares, “Beyond engagement, it’s about acknowledgement. And acknowledgement is crucial for young People of Color who often grow up feeling invisible and dismissed.
