Smartphone use right before bed does more than just expose you to blue light that can suppress melatonin. This week’s solar eclipse revealed light’s power to influence an environment. For those in the path of totality, we saw the sun’s capacity to emit powerful light even when 99% covered by the moon. Only during the moments of totality was the light safe for direct viewing. Just a little light makes a big impact. When we sleep, research shows that bedroom environments with even trace amounts of ambient light can lead to circadian disruption and impaired metabolism in individuals (PMID: 29195759). Healthy sleep/wake cycles rely on properly timed external factors like light exposure to regulate important biological processes (melatonin, cortisol, core body temperature).
