About us
Kid Power, Inc. inspires youth leadership by promoting academic advancement, physical and emotional wellness, and positive civic engagement in underserved communities throughout the District of Columbia. Co-Founders Max Skolnik and Caroline Sholl had a vision that young people could become agents of positive change in their communities which led to the launch of Kid Power in March 2002. Kid Power is the only nonprofit expanded learning program offering a three-pronged approach to helping hundreds of underserved DC students succeed academically, empowering them to become engaged leaders and responsible citizens, and fostering healthy living through school gardens and community markets. Kid Power operates four interconnected programs that include comprehensive, innovative, approaches that engage students, resulting in achieved academic proficiency, positive social-emotional growth, and increased civic engagement through evidence-based strategies such as hands-on instruction, mentorship and small group instruction, school-day alignment, family engagement, and differentiated instruction and preparation for career and life. Kid Power students work every day to build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient District.

We are thrilled to announce that Kid Power staff member Rita Hailes has been awarded the 2024 Shana Townes Community Builder Award. The award's namesake, Shana Townes, joined Kid Power in 2015 as an After-School Teacher at Malcolm X Elementary, holding various positions. She believed in the power of community, and in her seven years with the organization, she developed instrumental connections with youth, families, and our school communities. Kid Power created the "Shana Townes Community Builder" Award to annually recognize an Instructor who goes the extra mile in supporting the community by building relationships, supporting families, creating collaborations, and being there when it matters most. Rita has been a High Impact Tutoring Educator and After-School Instructor at Stanton Elementary School since 2023. We are grateful for the positive impact Rita continues to have on our programs and are dedicated to recognizing staff excellence. In reflecting on Rita’s impact on the program, Senior Program Director Sterling Pino De-Gale states, “Rita has built strong connections with families, ensured student safety, and increased program enrollment. Despite facing challenges, her resilience and commitment to the community make her a deserving honoree.” Congratulations to Rita for this well-deserved award. We are extensively grateful for her dedication to the program. #Grateful #DCPublicSchools #DCMentoringPrograms #DCSummerPrograms #DCNonprofits

As we close out another incredible Pride Month, we remember the iconic LGBTQ+ trailblazers across the DMV. Today we recognize Wanda Alston, an organizer for the Human Rights Campaign and director of the Mayor's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Affairs she frequently advocated for housing programs for homeless and at-risk LGBTQ+ youth. Her passion lives on through the The Wanda Alston Foundation which seeks to support LGBTQ+ youth with shelter and other resources. We are proud to support LGBTQ+ youth in all facets of Kid Power, Inc. #PrideMonth #KidPowerDC #DCPublicSchools 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️
