Who’s Shaping the Future of Agriculture Right Now? In 2023 alone, over $15.6 billion was invested in Agrifoodtech startups, following a $30.5 billion in 2022. These investments are fueling a wave of innovations for indoor farms: from automated planting and plant growth tracking, to compact kitchen-friendly mini fridge growing capsules like those from Agwa Not to mention AI-powered disease detection Fermata, leading the charge there! Why Are We Reinventing Farming? 🍅 Is it all about the profits? Well, not quite yet. Most smart farming companies heavily rely on venture capital funding to stay afloat, meaning profitability is still on the horizon. 🌍 Are we doing it to make our planet greener and more resource-efficient? Partially. The biggest cost for indoor farming is the electricity needed for artificial lighting and AC for cooling) which doesn't come cheap. So, What's the Deal? The potential here is enormous: imagine using less land for crops, which means more forests; using less water for irrigation. Reducing chemical use, which would lead to cleaner rivers and lakes. This is a personal one for me, after seeing so many water bodies in Ontario suffering from chemical contamination due to fertilizers. There has to be a better way.
