An international team of astronomers including those from the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe has discovered the earliest pair of quasars using the Subaru Telescope and Gemini North telescope in Hawai'i. These twin quasars, found by the team, shed light on the mysterious "reionization" era, a period 400 million to 1 billion years after the Big Bang when intense radiation altered the Universe’s nature. This study marks a pivotal moment in understanding how galaxies evolved in the early Universe. #Astronomy #Quasars #BigBang https://lnkd.in/eqDpUjBj

“You can’t even do good science without thinking very early upstream in your scientific investigation about what is going to be the impact on society.” - Professor Jodi Halpern MD, PhD Professor Halpern was recently appointed a new Co-Director of the UC Berkeley Kavli Center for Ethics, Science, and the Public. We look forward to the great work on ethics in science coming out of this Kavli Center with Halpern’s guidance. https://lnkd.in/eW4PEgvD

In support of the U.S. Extremely Large Telescope Program, the SuperFIRE optical infrared spectrometer, funded with a $3.1M grant from the Kavli Foundation to the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research at MIT, will be able to study phenomena as varied as exoplanet atmospheres, strong gravity astrophysics, and the emergence of stars and galaxies. “We’re building a spectrometer for a generation of telescopes that doesn’t yet exist,” said the institute’s director, Robert Simcoe. https://ow.ly/iFTO50SFLW4

Journalism and science have a symbiotic relationship. Scientific findings need to be heard to make an impact, and great science writers need great science stories to share. The Kavli Foundation is proud to have partnered with The Open Notebook to create free Science Journalism Master Classes, available online. The information includes how to spot “scientific hype” and misinformation, how to excel at covering studies, and how to center people in science stories. https://lnkd.in/ghw6DP_3

This week we gathered our 20 Kavli Institutes to foster discussion across the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience and theoretical physics; stimulate collaboration and exchange ideas; and identify potential impactful research directions. To kick-off our day of scientific exchange, we sat down with Nobel Laureate Frances Arnold who shared her personal and circuitous route to science and biotechnology, her appreciation for philanthropic funding and the difference it made for her (a shout out to The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and its Packard Fellow program), the flexible and encouraging research environment at Caltech, AI supercharging science, serving on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and more. She asked our foundation president, Cynthia Friend, her thoughts on the purpose of scientific research – “to generate knowledge and train on critical thinking” – and what Dr. Friend sees as successful elements of funding science: to provide seed funding that can create something new, early-career researchers excited by an emerging field and moving into those new fields of study, and other funders joining The Kavli Foundation in accelerating science and pushing new areas forward. #science #philanthropy
