Recently, Kasirer brought on yet another exceptional intern, Brooke Marinovich, as our newest Associate of Kasirer’s Real Estate Team. Brooke was part of Kasirer’s talented internship cohort for the last year where she primarily supported the real estate team on research projects that significantly benefited a variety of developers, property owners, and more. Brooke has a background in preservation, recently securing her Master of Science in Historic Preservation at Columbia, which will add substantial value to our clients with a portfolio of historic and landmark buildings. We are pleased to announce an exciting new addition to our team, Alex Shapanka. Alex, who has years of experience in the development and real estate sector, serves as a Vice President on our Real Estate team. Alex comes from the real estate company RXR, where he served in a project management role working on both vertical and horizontal development in New York and Colorado. Working from acquisition to lease-up, he managed ground-up multifamily projects accounting for 1.5 million SF, including 11,000 SF of ground floor retail and over 1,200 units. Before RXR, Alex served as the Assistant Vice President of Policy and Planning at the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) where he advised industry senior leadership on regulatory changes impacting commercial and residential ownership, management, and development. Alex brings a dynamic background in development, urban design, and public policy, and our team is confident that this combined expertise will result in much success for our clients. On May 29th, I was beyond honored and humbled to receive the Elie Wiesel Humanitarian Award from Selfhelp Community Services at their 2024 Gala. Selfhelp is the oldest and largest program serving Holocaust survivors in North America. What first attracted me to Selfhelp was their commitment to survivors and their dedication to helping them continue to survive and thrive. Their work continues to provide needed dignity and comfort for the thousands of seniors and at-risk populations as they grow older, and more frail. My father, of blessed memory, was alone and ultimately the only member of his immediate family to survive Nazi concentration camps and was rescued at the age of 14. Being the daughter of a survivor has defined me and serves as my impetus to serve New Yorkers. My father taught me that to survive, one must move forward, summon compassion, and dwell on the positive. In his survival stories were some invaluable strategic lessons like the importance of understanding who the authority figures are and how decisions are made. Most importantly, what I absorbed so proudly from my father were his sense of justice, strong survival instinct, his love of life and his desire to teach others. I am incredibly honored to have been recognized by such an outstanding organization that for survivors-perpetuates faith in society and warm, loving smiles. In March, Kasirer welcomed Palak Kaushal to our Corporate and Legislation team, who previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff at Housing Preservation and Development. Palak joins Kasirer as an Associate Vice President after serving as Deputy Chief of Staff at Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) for the past 3 years, being deeply involved in the city’s response to the migrant crisis. It’s been a busy two months for Kasirer as we’ve been engaged in robust discussions about the future of real estate in New York. Last month, Governor Hochul signed a housing deal that included an extension of the old 421-a program, a replacement program (485x), removal of the FAR cap, office-to-residential conversions, and other measures to promote new development. This was a long-fought battle, with labor unions, tenant advocates and developers actively engaged in negotiations with the State on programs to spur development, protect tenants and create fair-paying jobs. Relatedly, Kasirer was engaged in three productive and timely events that engaged industry leaders from a wide array of the New York real estate community in discussions on challenges and opportunities impacting the industry.
