💭 As the conference season is coming to a close, and we are arriving home from Academy of Management, now is the perfect time to start thinking about submitting a special issue to JBE. Were you part of a PDW, panel, or hallway discussion over ☕ on a novel and significant topic that has the potential to advance the business ethics field? Why not come together and propose a special issue to our journal! This is an important and meaningful way to be at the forefront of the future of the discipline. You can find more information about the guidelines of a SI proposal here: https://lnkd.in/ectc9-fG The next deadline is 30 September. For any questions, contact our special issue editors Mary Sully de Luque or Glen Whelan.
About us
The Journal of Business Ethics publishes only original articles from a wide variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives concerning ethical issues related to business that bring something new or unique to the discourse in their field. From its inception the Journal has aimed to improve the human condition by providing a public forum for discussion and debate about ethical issues related to business. In order to promote a dialogue between the various interested groups as much as possible, papers are presented in a style relatively free of specialist jargon.

Our article entitled, 'How does legal status inform immigrant agency during encounters of workplace incivility?', is now in press at Journal of Business Ethics. Writing it was certainly a cathartic experience. A real pleasure to collaborate with Dr Amal Abdellatif (Amal: I miss our Thursday morning conversations!). I avoided social media for a long time (joined Twitter only during the depths of the pandemic). However, I'm glad that I entered the social media space as this is where Dr Amal Abdellatif and I met and our collaboration developed (we refer to exactly how our interaction commenced on social media in the article). Social media, notwithstanding its myriad aspects of toxicity, can certainly bridge geographical distance and nurture collaborative relationships even when researchers have yet to meet in person. Thank you to the amazing guest editors of the special issue on the 'The Business of (Im)migration: Bodies Across Borders' and to three extraordinary reviewers who encouraged us to think deeper about the implications of our ideas. We are facing increasing challenges in the food system that are associated with the need for safe and just food production and consumption systems. Understanding value chains in this context is essential for driving sustainability and innovation - these are key topics at Vlerick Business School. My wonderful co-authors, Matthew Gorton, Klaus Kastenhofer, Luis Esquivel, Mariana Nicolau and I collaborated with one of the major multinational grocery retailers to explore social evaluations of their suppliers, analysing the implementation of labour standards for its fruit and vegetable suppliers. I am very excited to see this study now in print in Journal of Business Ethics. If you are concerned about value chains and the social evaluations of your partners in the food chain, this may trigger your interest. Recent news has spotlighted major issues in agri-food supply chains: farmers protesting their share of food prices, forced and child labour, and deforestation from palm oil plantations. But how do consumers understand fairness in these supply chains, and how does it influence their behaviour? In our new paper, published in the Journal of Business Ethics, our team—Margherita Del Prete, PhD, Artyom Golossenko, PhD, Matthew Gorton, Barbara Tocco, and Antonella Samoggia, —explores these questions. Through studies conducted in Italy and the UK, we found that fairness in agri-food supply chains significantly impacts consumer behaviour. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 Some consumers prioritize fairness more than others. They are more likely to boycott unethical brands and support Fairtrade products. These consumers have strong moral identities and ethical sensitivity, often characterized by high agreeableness. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗 A key outcome of our paper is the 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗 scale, which measures consumers’ dispositions toward fairness in food supply chains and predicts demand for ethically produced products. The paper "𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘪-𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 (𝘍𝘈𝘐𝘙𝘍𝘖𝘖𝘋): 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯" can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eeQKW7_A #ethics #fairness #fairtrade #AgriFood #EthicalConsumerism #SupplyChainEthics #BusinessEthics #SustainableAgriculture #FairTrade #ConsumerBehavior #Research #JournalOfBusinessEthics #FairnessInFood #FAIRFOOD #SustainableSupplyChains #EthicalShopping

With frequent discussion in the press about the exploitative treatment of hospitality workers, what constitutes a socially responsible approach to HR in the hotel sector? My co-author Dennis Nickson and I consider this issue in our recently published paper in the Journal of Business Ethics. Through an investigation of employees’ experiences, we discuss how the management philosophies underpinning the practices used are central to determining the responsibleness of an HRM approach. Crucially, we conclude that pay and working conditions which exceed the statutory minimum and which ensure an adequate, living wage for employees are a cornerstone practice, and essential for the avoidance of an irresponsible approach.
