Jones Edmunds is thrilled to announce and celebrate an incredible achievement. The University of Florida’s concrete canoe team, which included our very own Engineer Intern, Maggie Deaderick, claimed its fourth national title at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Engineering Championships in Utah. The 12-member team and their innovative concrete canoe, Springseeker, placed first overall in a highly competitive field, besting top contenders such as Universite Laval (Quebec), California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, Virginia Tech, and Western Kentucky University. In addition to the overall victory, the UF team excelled in various categories: • Second place in the Women’s Slalom • Second place in the Men’s Slalom • Fifth place in the Women’s Sprint • Second place in the Men’s Sprint • Third place in the Co-Ed Sprint • Third place for Best Technical Proposal • Third place for Best Technical Presentation • Third place for Best Final Product This accomplishment underscores the dedication, skill, and ingenuity of the team members. It also highlights the collaborative spirit and excellence in engineering that the University of Florida fosters. Maggie’s involvement with this remarkable team is a testament to her talent and commitment to the field of civil engineering. Today, we celebrate the incredible women who are shaping our world through engineering. From building sustainable cities to innovating life-saving technologies, women engineers are breaking barriers and making history every day. Here at Jones Edmunds, we are celebrating International Women in Engineering Day by acknowledging the amazing work that our engineers are doing to preserve our quality of life in Florida. A special shoutout to our amazing Civil Engineer, Carol Sawyer, who works in the solid waste department here at Jones Edmunds! She has served as Project Engineer or Project Manager on various solid waste projects, including rate studies, landfill expansions, facility improvements, Title V assistance, permitting, and construction-phase services. Most notably, the NRSWA’s Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project is the most recent example of her commitment to innovation and contribution to waste conversion and energy recovery. This project is the first in Florida to convert landfill gas (LFG) into pipeline-quality natural gas. It is also the first landfill to interconnect to the Florida Gas Transmission’s interstate pipeline and inject processed LFG. Let’s celebrate women in engineering. Jones Edmunds has a long history of supporting Dr. Steve Duranceau and his research students. Dr. Duranceau is a Professor and Director of the Environmental Systems Engineering Institute at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he focuses his research on water treatment. We are proud to continue supporting the Water Engineering graduate research and educational opportunities offered at UCF. As a part of our ongoing relationship, we hosted Dr. Duranceau and part of his research team in our Alachua office. Our Water-Wastewater team left the session excited about what they learned and the future. This year’s presenters were doctoral candidates Christopher Hagglund, EI (Evaluating the Performance of a Reverse Osmosis Process that Blends Nanofiltration Concentrate with Brackish Feedwater Prior to Treatment at the Pilot-Scale), Nino Stea, EI (Assessing PFAS Occurrence in a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility), and Gabriela Ford, EI (Copper Corrosion Study for a Central Floridian Utility using an Alternative Bench-Scale Method). Dr. Jessica Cormier, a post-doctoral scholar, accompanied the group and provided an update on her research in Polk County. Following the presentations, the group thoroughly enjoyed networking, sharing ideas, and forecasting the future of our industry. Jones Edmunds’ Executive Director, Brian Icerman, hosted the event and summarized the morning well. “In April, it was my pleasure to speak to Dr. Duranceau’s class on behalf of Jones Edmunds. However, every year, hosting his team gives me even greater joy. The water industry is in good hands with future professional engineers like Chris, Niño, Gabriela, and Jessica.
