The mission of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts, as the Pioneer Valley’s central Jewish communal organization, is to ensure the continuity and well-being of a vibrant Jewish community in the Pioneer Valley, Israel and the world. Guided by the values of Torah (Jewish learning), klal yisrael (the responsibility of each Jew for another), tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedakah (justice, righteousness and philanthropy), the Federation, together with its local and worldwide partners, educates and advocates for and supports Jews locally, nationally and internationally, by: planning and evaluating strategically; raising and allocating funds; developing, inspiring and providing leadership.

Jewish Federations are disturbed by reports of an apparent targeted shooting of three college students of Palestinian descent in Burlington, Vermont, Saturday evening. We pray for their complete recovery. There is no place for hate in our country, and should authorities discover that this was a hate crime, we urge the most forceful possible action.

Our hearts are with the people of #Israel as they try to be resilient in the face of recent heartbreaking and terrifying events. The Jewish nonprofit sector in North America is deeply bound up with communities in Israel, and nothing can be "business as usual" as this crisis unfolds. At the same time, and for that same reason, Leading Edge is proceeding with our work supporting leaders and workplace culture in Jewish nonprofits. Leadership and culture are never more important than when times are hard. “I’m overwhelmed by the scale of the loss, by the sense that there’s not one household in Israel untouched by grief.” We’ve just received a video update from Sigal Shelach, the executive director of JDC programs in Israel, recorded today in Aseret. Sigal and her team are a key address for at-risk populations in the hardest-hit Israeli villages and cities, and they’re working around the clock to ensure that the elderly, people with disabilities, children and families, and others receive the help and hope they need.
