Our vision is a fully healthy James River supporting thriving communities. Be a James Changer.

About us

The James River Association (JRA) was founded in 1976 and is a member-supported, non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the James River. We believe if you change the James, the James will change you! OUR MISSION: The mission of the James River Association is to be a guardian of the James River. We provide a voice for the river and take action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources. OUR VISION: To see a fully healthy James River supporting thriving communities. WE PROTECT: JRA monitors the river, responds to problems, seeks policy changes, and implements on-the-ground projects to restore the river’s health. We protect through our Watershed Restoration, James Riverkeeper, and River Advocacy programs. WE CONNECT: JRA helps communities benefit from the river by increasing river access, supporting river-related events, and implementing volunteer projects. We connect through our Environmental Education and Community Conservation programs. OUR APPROACH: Awareness - Ensuring all watershed residents know their connection to the James and their role in protecting it. Appreciation- Ensuring everyone has a personal connection to the James River and is inspired to do their part. Action - Engaging partners and members to put projects on the ground that protect the James and connect people to it. Advocacy - Achieving policy changes to drive actions needed to protect the James and connect people to it. JRA continues to focus and align its programs to address the most pressing issues facing the James River. Through the support of its members, supporters and partners, the James River Association is poised to usher in a new chapter of success for the River and the organization. Please visit our website at thejamesriver.org for more information or to support or become involved with JRA.

Our volunteers have gathered bacteria samples from all around the watershed and updated results on the James River Watch website a bit earlier this week. With the holiday tomorrow, we know you might be planning to spend some extra time on the river. So, we're here to help you stay informed about the river conditions before you head out. Visit our website to check out the latest bacteria scores and other useful river-related information before you pack your picnic basket. The passing rate for the whole watershed was 83%, which is fairly average for us. However, there are a few locations with very high bacteria readings so we recommend not swimming in those areas for at least 48 hours. Plus there are storms forecasted across Virginia in the next few days which might affect the river conditions. We always suggest that you hold off swimming in the river for 48 hours after a heavy downpour. https://lnkd.in/dWXmyXKG

The James River Association, in partnership with Colonial National Historical Park, is proud to have received a 2024 grant from the National Park Foundation to support our Junior Ranger Angler program providing youth an opportunity to gain new skills, connect with park rangers, and start building lifelong relationships with parks through fishing! Our first Junior Ranger Angler camp is in full swing with a week packed with outdoor activities! From mastering new fishing rods to exploring indigenous fishing traditions and net making with Kalen Anderson from the Nansemond tribe, and paddling on Powhatan Creek, the students have embraced nature with remarkable enthusiasm despite the heat!

The 2024-2025 James River Leadership Expedition (JRLE) is off to a momentous start with our first leg – the Upper Expedition from Springwood Boat ramp to Snowden, a journey of 31 miles in canoes through rapids and backwoods! JRLE is a year-long leadership program for any Virginia high school students who is interested in advocating for the future of the James River. In addition to leadership meetings and a Capstone Project, all students get to spend a week on the James, experiencing the river first hand! Follow along on their Upper James journey through this website blog all week long. This first week follows the journey of 11 students, 1 teacher, and 3 JRA staff as they navigate the Upper James. https://lnkd.in/e2t-YH3J

The JRA Restoration team had another amazing spring planting season in the Middle James watershed! In total, we planted 69 acres (21,848 trees!) of new streamside forest. Of that, 3.4 acres (1,042 trees) were installed with the help of awesome JRA volunteers, and those of our partners Rivanna Conservation Alliance and the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River. Thank you to JRA’s amazing volunteers and Riparian Stewards, who donated over 300 hours of their time this spring! https://lnkd.in/eJnCsWtr

In his memoir Walk, Ride, Paddle, Senator Tim Kaine shares his epic 1,228-mile journey into the “faraway nearby.” On a quest to find the best in himself and in all of us, Kaine hiked 559 miles on the Appalachian Trail, cycled 321 miles through the Blue Ridge Mountains, and paddled 348 miles on the James River—creating the Virginia Nature Triathlon in the process. Recently our President and CEO, Bill Street, welcomed Senator Kaine to share his stories with us through a live webinar last week. If you were unable to join us, stop by YouTube to catch the recording! https://lnkd.in/e3ZsZ56
