“In San Diego, the weather is pleasant, the water views are lovely, and affordable housing is hard to find. ‘San Diego is at the forefront of California’s affordable housing crisis, and California is at the forefront of a national housing shortage,’ San Diego Magazine recently wrote. “To help mitigate the crisis, the City of San Diego has created the ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) Bonus Program—recently named a winner of the Ivory Prize, which honors innovations in housing affordability.” - Pro Builder Utopia San Diego’s ADU Bonus Program is helping to boost housing supply in a community that needs it most. Last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the City of Boston—a former Ivory Prize finalist—and the metro region $3 million to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). The Council plans on using the funds to bring modular housing construction to the region in an effort to boost housing supply and lower housing costs. Congratulations to the Council!
"The US Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD] on Wednesday awarded the Metropolitan Area Planning Council and a consortium of local cities a $3 million grant to study the idea of bringing a modular housing plant — a factory, for housing — to Greater Boston." “'Modular is a promising technique,' said MAPC Executive Director Marc Draisen. 'We’re not using modular nearly to the scale and effectiveness we could be, and we’re losing out on jobs by not having a factory here. From a housing and jobs perspective, it’s a good idea to see if we can do this locally.'” We'll be sharing more about this exciting announcement over the next week! For now, check out The Boston Globe's story on the Biden-Harris Administration and HUD's awarding of grant funding for the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program.

New York City is endeavoring to reduce rent prices by boosting housing supply through office-to-residential conversion. Through updated zoning code, property tax advantages for affordable conversions, and a government program to accelerate conversion approval processes, the city’s efforts are showing promise. Ivory Innovations’ Katelyn Johnston shares a case study on what New York City’s office-to-residential conversion programs can teach us about increasing housing supply. 🔗 Link: https://lnkd.in/gy56S223

In case you missed it: Last month, Ivory Innovations’ Chadwick Reed co-authored a research paper published by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. Titled "Overcoming Barriers to Manufactured Housing: Promising Approaches from Five Case Studies," the paper explores successful efforts to make manufactured homes a more affordable homeownership option. The research highlights the importance of education and advocacy to address misconceptions, along with the need for flexible zoning regulations to accommodate modern manufactured housing developments. This research marks the culmination of a three-part series funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with Chad Reed making significant contributions throughout the project. 🔗 Learn more about this impactful research and its findings here: https://lnkd.in/g4bhNKxv #housingresearch #manufacturedhousing #ivoryinnovations
