In partnership with Amboseli Trust for Elephants (ATE), IVO is launching a new program near Amboseli National Park in southern #Kenya. The park, renowned for its diverse wildlife, including African #elephants, attracts tourists and sustains a predominantly Maasai population. With less than 40,000 elephants left in Kenya, the region faces significant human-wildlife conflict.
Surveyors have been interviewing local Maasai livestock herders since early February to identify their #agricultural and health concerns for domestic #animals and assess their tolerance towards elephants. Once analyzed, this data will be presented back to the local community this July to foster collaboration in addressing their challenges.
Our new program will leverage the technical expertise of ATE and IVO to empower Maasai herders with essential skills and knowledge, paving the way for sustainable solutions to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and improve overall community well-being. Through collaborative efforts, the initiative seeks to foster harmony between #wildlife conservation, #animalwelfare and human livelihoods in the Amboseli ecosystem, ensuring the long-term survival of both wildlife and local agricultural communities.
