This morning, as a part of the dynamic United States Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, our CEO Darrell Byers gave his remarks on The Procurement Economy: Strategically Growing Minority Businesses, alongside Mayor of New Bedford, Jon Mitchell. “Procurement is one of the most important and powerful tools you have at your disposal and this is a historic moment to address the systemic problem of racial and gender wealth disparity in American cities…There are only six months left to allocate the ARPA funds – it is a huge opportunity not to be missed. Working together we have the chance to direct these funds in a way that provides the most bang for our tax dollars, that rights some historic economic wrongs, and that brings us a step closer to a nation where all men—and women—have an equal shot at the American Dream.“ - Darrell Byers, CEO This premier event brings together Mayors from across the nation to tackle today's most pressing urban issues. If you are at the conference, keep an eye out for Darrell and Elizabeth Reynoso, our Director of Research, Evaluation, and Impact, as they engage with top policymakers, share best practices, and forge powerful connections to drive impactful change. Today, as we commemorate Juneteenth, we reflect on the journey toward freedom and equity. Bernard Johnson, Senior Director of Programs and Partnerships at Interise, captures the significance of #Juneteenth in advancing economic justice: "As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor the fearlessness and tenacity of those who fought for freedom and acknowledge the ongoing struggle of the Black community for economic and social equity. At Interise, our history is profoundly linked with empowering minority-owned businesses to overcome systemic blockages to success. Founded in 2004, Interise has since transformed the economic landscape for over 10,000 businesses through our #StreetWiseMBA and #StrongBusinessSTRONGER programs, which equip historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, and timely resources necessary for growth and sustainability. Juneteenth marks the end of chattel slavery but also continues to spotlight the persistent disparities that Black entrepreneurs face. It powers our continued commitment to advancing economic justice and building a future where entrepreneurs can thrive without barriers." - Bernard Johnson Together let’s celebrate Juneteenth with the launch of our newest Small Business STRONGER Procurement program.
