Igniting community wellness and resilience through collaboration, compassion and love.

About us

Founded in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a national non-profit health organization domiciled in New Orleans. Many people of color and their families in the Greater New Orleans area do not have access to programs that address their full mental, emotional and physical health. This prevents people in our city from living fully healthy lives and weakens our communities. Because of this, IWES works with communities, schools, individuals and organizations to provide tailored health and wellness services that address this lack of health options and access. We combine advocacy, health education, research and direct services to improve wellness in local communities. Ultimately, when New Orleans is a city that puts health first, our people live happier, more resilient lives and our communities will be stronger!

  • We recently partnered with UNITY of Greater New Orleans to study what impacts hurricane readiness in our community, especially for people who have challenges accessing important information, securing supplies, and coordinating a shelter-in-place or evacuation safety plan. Our research showed that while many of the people we spoke to were aware of available resources in times of a hurricane, many are not signed up nor are they registered to receive resources and/or information. Therefore, now that the first hurricane has officially made landfall in the US this season, we wanted to make sure that you all have access to some helpful resources, including spaces that can accommodate specific health or mobility needs during a hurricane. 🗣️ Please share with friends and loved ones, as this information could save lives! Stay informed and stay safe! Scroll through to learn more about each resource, and check out their websites for additional information. #HurricanePreparedness #HurricaneSeason #Louisiana #IWES #UnityOfGreaterNewOrleans

  • Today is International Non-Binary People's Day! 💛🤍💜🖤 We want to uplift Chi Nwosu, a ✷ Queer, Nonbinary Nigerian ✷ artist, and their illustration and love hymn written to all queer, trans, and sweet beings who must live in-between worlds: ********* the night sky is in my blood, the night sky is in my blood, the night sky is in my blood! i lift my eyes towards the mountains, from where will my help come? my help comes from my protectors in the sky, on the land, chattering in my bones. i am more than this flesh. i am joy. i am a memory. i am a coward. i am pleasure. i am longing. i am the thunderous waking of a billion stars, remembering life before this corporeal form. i am set free. ********* If you like what you see, visit Chi's shop at littlegaze.com, there are some amazing and powerful pieces there! ♡ And as we always point out, even after this day ends, we must continue to celebrate, uplift, and support LGBTQ+ folx and do whatever is in our power, influence, and control to end stigma and promote love, compassion, and acceptance.

  • Last month our Puentes Para Invitados (PPI) team went back to Albuquerque to continue our work to support the mental health and social needs of individuals, communities, organizations, and systems in New Mexico. Currently, we're focused on increasing Social Emotional Learning practices and supporting the resilience of youth in and outside of Albuquerque Public Schools, so we met with partners during a human centered design sprint to discuss what Social Emotional Learning (SEL) looks like and what more can be done to address the needs of young people in Albuquerque. We want to send a major thank you to our hosts at La Plazita Institute, as well as our partners @united-voices-for-newcomer-rights, @centro-savila,, Project Venture, and more. Stay tuned for more PPI updates as we continue to create an ecosystem for healing in New Mexico! #TheIWESway #ABQ #Albuquerque #humancentereddesign #IWES #HCD

  • We are thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news about our Bounce Back initiative! ✨ Last week we found out that we were selected as a Runner Up in the Children and Youth Resilience Challenge by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the first-ever federal prize challenge to fund community-led, culturally-responsive innovations that promote resilience and advance mental health and well-being among children and youth. We are humbled and overjoyed by this news, as we are thrilled to receive additional funding to continue to support the mental health and resilience of New Orleans youth through the arts, culture, nature, and ancestral connection. As a reminder, last year we created Bounce Back to explore the connection between youth mental health and the arts. After 4 months of programming and a big city-wide event in March, our staff traveled to D.C. with the other 13 finalists to present about our work at the Resilience Innovations Showcase. Instead of us trying to recap every activity, check out the video here from the Showcase where our Sr. Dir. of Media & Communications, Iman Shervington, introduces the program and shares a video she created documenting the full process. Once again, we just want to express our gratitude to everyone that reviewed our program and saw the value in this work, and we want to congratulate the WINNER, Students Run Philly Style, and our co-Runner Up winner, the Travis County Transformation Project, as well as all of the other finalists, Boys & Girls Club of Benton County, Briya Public Charter School, Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance CDC, Fresno Community Health Improvement Partnership, Geisinger, Kentucky Youth Advocates, Nate’s Place; A Wellness and Recovery Center, Project Harmony, Project Venture, Sam & Devorah Foundation for Transgender Youth, and UC San Francisco. Stay tuned for updates as we build out and expand the Bounce Back program to make it accessible to even more young people in our city! #ResilienceChallenge #TheIWESWay #BounceBack #NewOrleans

  • Today is National HIV Testing Day (#NHTD) and we want to let you know that you can get FREE HIV, Syphilis and hepatitis C testing at some Walgreens. This day is very important to use here at IWES because we've been working for over 20 years to reduce HIV stigma and expand access to HIV/STI testing, treatment, and care. By 📉 decreasing the rising rates of STIs, 📈 increasing the visibility and accessibility of services, and normalizing conversations about risk and prevention, we can all #EndTheEpidemic in our lifetimes. That takes knowing your status, so check and see if there's a Walgreens near you offering free testing today. No appointment is needed! and if you get tested, you'll get your results in 20 minutes or less. ❤️ 👉🏾👉🏾To see where you can access FREE and fast #HIV, STI, and hepatitis testing near you even after today, visit https://lnkd.in/gshf94TS. Learn more and find out about the latest in prevention and treatment — including PrEP, the medication to prevent HIV — at www.greaterthan.org. #NationalHIVTestingDay #NHTD2024
