Staff Spotlight: Meet Sakindi! Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sakindi and his father were forced to flee their war-torn country when he was just three years old following the tragic murder of his mother and baby sister. Like many refugees, the path to safety and stability would inevitably necessitate moving around quite a bit, so much so that Sakindi would end up attending five different elementary schools as a young child. He, along with his father and other family members, joined other displaced families in Uganda to live in the Nakivale refugee camp before eventually receiving the life-changing opportunity to resettle in the United States of America. Sadly, by the time Sakindi would make the journey to Nashville in 2016, his father had already fallen ill and passed away at Nakivale where proper medical care was not accessible. Upon landing at BNA, he was greeted by staff and volunteers from World Relief, another organization who like Inspiritus, welcomes new refugees to the U.S. Despite all the challenges that came with trying to navigate life in the U.S., Sakindi dedicated much of his free time to helping other refugees like him as a volunteer with World Relief. He would soon find work as an interpreter for Tyson Foods before reaching his ultimate goal in June 2022- to become a full-time employee at a refugee-serving nonprofit. A little over two years after joining Nashville’s RIS team as a Case Manager for Reception and Placement, Sakindi has earned a well-deserved promotion as their new Economic Empowerment Manager! His supervisor has this to say about Sakindi: “Our office is so excited for Sakindi as he takes this next step. He consistently goes the extra mile for his clients and stands up for what he believes in. Sakindi actively seeks opportunities for growth and isn't afraid to put himself out there. We need more staff like him at Inspiritus!” Sakindi’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and exemplifies why we welcome refugees. Congratulations on your new role, Sakindi! Inspiritus, the city of Nashville, and the United States are lucky to have you!

Inspiritus is thrilled to celebrate Petro Dudnyk, who, with the support of Thrive Community Lending, is bringing the beloved Ukrainian franchise, Lviv Croissants, to Roswell, GA! Opening on August 10th, this will be the first American location of the popular bakery known for its savory croissant sandwiches like the cheeseburger and teriyaki chicken. Beyond the delicious food, Petro's mission is to elevate the work of United for Ukrainian Kids, connecting orphans from Ukraine to host families in America. Learn more about Petro's inspiring journey and how he's making a difference in this recent article by Rachel Cohen-Noebes from the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Hurricane Beryl Response Update: Inspiritus Disaster Relief teams are hard at work in Bay City, Texas providing crucial support to the Sanford Community Center. This beloved center has long been a safe and welcoming space for youth, families, and visitors, offering classes in art, ESL, poetry, cooking, and hosting community events. #HurricaneBeryl's fierce winds caused extensive damage, uprooting trees and leaving dangerous debris, particularly on the playground use by local children. Our dedicated teams are providing essential chainsaw and swamping services to clear the area and ensure the center can reopen as soon as possible. The Sanford Community Center is more than a community hub; it's a historic landmark. Originally built in 1928 as The Palacios Colored School, it played a crucial role during the segregation era. It later became Rainbow Land Day Care and now serves as a Sanford Community Center. We will continue our efforts in Matagorda County, Texas, through August 9. There’s still time to help! Volunteers of all skill levels are needed. Click the link below to learn how you or your group can make a difference and support Hurricane Beryl survivors on their road to recovery.
