In-House Connect is where in-house counsel come to connect w/ peers, sharpen key skills, & advance their careers.

About us

🗣 In-House Connect ("IHC") is where in-house counsel come to connect with peers, sharpen key skills, and advance their careers. ► IHC started ten years ago as an NYC-based Meetup Group. Every month, IHC would partner with law firms to host & organize free CLE classes. Twice a year, we hosted fun & festive networking mixers. Over the years, IHC has helped countless in-house counsel build relationships with peers, outside counsel, & vendors by organizing high-quality, curated CLE/skills classes. ► When Covid hit, IHC was forced to suspend its operations. Instead of giving up when the in-house community needed us most, IHC reinvented itself as an online-only networking group, hosting all events by Zoom and holding virtual networking sessions. Since then, our member and audience base, speaker quality, and ability to facilitate quality networking opportunities have grown exponentially. ❤️ Inspired by our thoughtful, curated events and attendee quality, we have received high praise & gratitude from event attendees and sponsors alike. ❤️ ► IHC's members and audience base are vast and diverse. We have hosted in-house counsel from startups to Fortune 10 companies, from all different industries, from all across the country. More than half of our audience is senior counsel level or above. About half of the in-house counsel who attend our events engage in virtual networking. In the future, we hope to include in-house counsel from Canada, Mexico, and London. ► Presently, our events are always open to in-house counsel. When we are able to, we also open our events to law firm partners, associates, legal services providers, and students. In the future, to support the continued growth of the group, we do anticipate charging a fee for access to our content and programming, either on an annual basis or per-event basis. The new 2024 Generative AI in Professional Services report from the Thomson Reuters Institute showed that professionals are cautiously optimistic about the opportunities in generative AI – with corporate legal teams being the most bullish. But how are legal teams currently using GenAI, and how should you get started with GenAI? Last week, Jason Bess, Matt H., and Ryan G. discussed these questions and more on the In-House Connect webinar, Gen AI Use Cases for In-House Counsel. Over 350 in-house legal professionals tuned in to learn all about Gen AI use cases and what's happening in today's legal departments. Here are five key takeaways from this fun and engaging session: 1. Generative AI in Legal Tasks: Gen AI is increasingly leveraged in various legal tasks such as contract drafting, review, and e-discovery, aiming to enhance efficiency and productivity. Legal professionals are cautious of its potential but also optimistic about the improvements it can bring to the legal workflow. 2. Ethical and Compliance Considerations: Adoption of AI technology in legal practices necessitates a strong understanding of ethical obligations, privacy concerns, attorney-client privilege, and local rules. Legal departments must ensure thorough vetting of AI vendors and adherence to ethical standards to avoid misuse and ensure compliance. 3. Impact on Legal Work and Employment: While AI has the potential to revolutionize legal work by automating routine tasks and enhancing accuracy, there are concerns about job displacement and the need for upskilling. Legal professionals must balance the benefits of AI with its impact on employment and professional roles. 4. AI Integration in Existing Systems: Integrating AI into existing software contracts and corporate systems can streamline processes like M&A due diligence and manage outside counsel costs. Successful integration demands a deep understanding of how AI tools function and their impact on current workflows and cost structures. 5. Future Trends and Adoption: The future of AI in the legal field includes broader and more innovative applications within legal departments and cross-functional teams. Legal professionals must prepare for increased adoption by focusing on advocacy, risk management, and continuous learning about new AI advancements and their implications for the industry. Thank you so much to our wonderful panel, our gracious sponsor, Thomson Reuters, and all who tuned in!

The relationship between in-house counsel and outside counsel is pivotal to the success of any organization. This week, In-House Connect, hosted a webinar on how to build a strong high value partnerships between In-House counsel and Outside Counsel, featuring a rockstar panel including David Ackert, Mariana Loose, Marty Chao, PIA THOMPSON ⚖️, and Kris Ashman! Our moderator, David Ackert, led a thoughtful and engaging discussion and best practices for building strong relationships between in-house and outside counsel. Here are the five top takeways for developing and maintaining effective, high-value partnerships between in-house and outside counsel: 1. Timely Response and Communication: Prompt acknowledgment and responsive communication (within 2-4 hours) is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and foster trust. Over-communicating expectations and preferences can preemptively address potential issues and align client and counsel expectations. 2. Client Feedback and Relationship Building: Regular, informal check-ins are more beneficial than formal feedback mechanisms. Building and maintaining meaningful relationships through proactive and personalized outreach is key to sustaining high-value partnerships. Understanding the client's needs and maintaining open lines of communication are essential for delivering tailored solutions. 3. Networking and Business Development: Establishing and nurturing networks before they are needed is vital. Being liked and considered essential by clients ensures that outside counsel fills the gaps in the organization effectively. Building relationships is a marathon, not a sprint – persistence and genuine gestures can make a lasting impact. 4. Matching Client Needs and Law Firm Capabilities: Recognizing the specific requirements and constraints of a company, such as budget and specialized needs, allows for better selection of legal counsel. Building a referral system, understanding client problems, and communicating how the firm's services align with the client’s needs are essential for sustained business development. 5. Customizing Communication Strategies: Communication should be personalized, unprompted, and considerate of individual preferences. Balance in frequency and type of outreach ensures engagement without overwhelming the client. Developing a thorough understanding of operational perspectives aids in fostering stronger, more aligned partnerships. Thank you so much to our wonderful panel and to all who tuned in!
