Welcome to Starbucks and Wegman's, now inside the Infinitive office. Just kidding. These are an homage to our early years. Let me explain. Since Infinitive's founding in 2003, we have always been a remote/hybrid workplace. We were ahead of the times. It was as much about saving money as it was flexibility. We didn't have video calls and screen sharing, but we certainly had audio calls and could share files easily. We didn't have a permanent office until 2008, and when we did, it was very small and couldn't accommodate everyone. We worked the way many startups do now. There was no need for office space for everyone, but just enough to encourage people to come in for a couple of days to meet with their team. I would often interview people at Starbucks and Wegmans (an innovative grocery chain on the East Coast). I would explain to folks that we were doing things differently than others. Being different paid off. Our flexible way of working was a great test to see if people were culture fits. If they were too reliant on a permanent office to go to, I knew they weren't a good fit. With a Starbucks or Wegman's interview, candidates who weren't a match would remove themselves from the running, or we wouldn't move forward with them, which was better for everyone in the long run. For now, we have permanent space with just enough room for team members to get together (though it can't fit the whole team). That might change in the future. After all, we're constantly evolving. But for now, this is our space, and Starbucks and Wegmans are honored as office room names...a sign of earlier times that still represent the heart of who we are.

This question around whether or not AI will destroy humanity is so hotly debated, it has its own metric– p(doom) – the probability that AI will annihilate humanity. According to optimists, the estimated p(doom) is around 0.01%. The pessimists, on the other hand, put p(doom) at 99.999999%. Learn where various experts fall on the p(doom) scale on the Infinitive blog: https://lnkd.in/eBDCag8a

I always enjoy our All-Company calls... but today I experienced a shocking moment. We always introduce new folks and ask them to share something interesting about themselves..what I'm about to write next blew me away. One of our folks shared that they hit the Shift key on the keyboard with only their right pinky. I thought to myself: “That's wild.” Then, I noticed everyone else was equally shocked…but they were saying they only use their left pinky! That blew my mind just as much. Apparently, being an ambidextrous pinky Shift key hitter is strange to an entire generation or at least subset of the population. I even heard someone say: “I didn't know there were two Shift keys on a keyboard” Yes there are. It was shocking. Please tell me that you are ambidextrous with the Shift key to restore my faith in my 10th grade typing class. Or, are you a left-pinky-only or right-pinky-only Shift key hitter…I am guessing right pinky exclusive is the minority…and hoping upon hope the majority is ambidextrous pinky Shift key hitters. What are you? Left, right, or both?
