Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced a final rule change to 25 CFR Part 293 that reflects input and recommendations provided by Tribes during two listening sessions and seven formal consultation sessions as well as written comments from Tribes and the public submitted to the Department. Prior to the official announcement, Profs. Kathryn Rand, Steve Light, and John Tahsuda of the Indian Nations Gaming & Governance Program at William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada-Las Vegas discussed what the proposed changes would mean for tribes, states, and other affected parties. The UNLV Gaming Law Journal is inviting article submissions from professionals and scholars who specialize in tribal gaming law for an upcoming issue commemorating the 5th anniversary of the Indian Nations Gaming & Governance Program Gaming and Governance Program. They are aiming to finalize all submissions and begin the editing process around the end of August, early September. Faculty Director of the Indian Nations Gaming & Governance Program Prof. Addie Rolnick is speaking during the at the NIH #Unite tomorrow on Friday, July 19, in Section V, entitled "Best Practices, Gaps, and Opportunities in Intervention Research Addressing Structural Racism and Health Disparities." Prof. Rolnick will be talking about health and mental health disparities faced by Indigenous communities and the relationship between health inequality and justice system involvement, promising approaches, tribal innovations, and research gaps. Late on Wednesday, July 10, a fire started near the San Carlos Apache Reservation and spread rapidly due to high winds, causing extensive damage. The San Carlos Apache Tribe declared a state of emergency on Friday, July 12, after the fire burned about 2,000 acres and destroyed at least 13 homes. As of late morning Tuesday, July 16, the Watch Fire had burned 2,162 acres and was 81% contained.
