It's been a year since our team unveiled our foundation's new name. We reintroduced ourselves as Inatai Foundation, a name that better reflected the ways we wanted to show up for Washington's brilliant, vibrant, and powerful communities. To celebrate this milestone, we're sharing this reminder on how to pronounce inatai, a Chinuk Wawa word that means “across” or “other side." We hold tremendous gratitude to the Chinook Nation for granting us permission to use inatai as our name. Read the story behind the change: https://lnkd.in/gQfsV_T7

Meet Joel Moffett—Tribal leader, philanthropy expert, a director at Native Americans in Philanthropy and a new member of Inatai Foundation’s board of directors! Joel is a citizen of the Nez Perce Tribe and the Director of Environmental and Special Projects at Native Americans in Philanthropy, where he leads funding efforts to support Tribal communities across the United States. This includes extensive experience advancing equity through 501(c)(4) activities. Joel was the youngest person ever to be elected to the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee, on which he served for eight years. During that time, he acted as Vice Chair and Treasurer, as well as Chair of its Finance Investment Committee, which manages hundreds of millions in assets. “As a philanthropy professional, I am inspired by the way Inatai lives its values every day,” Joel shared. “I’m deeply committed to real change that transforms the balance of power and am honored to be joining an organization that does this by centering Washington’s communities.” We’re excited to be working with Joel, who will also join the Inatai board’s Audit and Risk Management Committee. Exactly five years ago in 2019, Vice President of Grantmaking Steven Cole-Schwartz joined our foundation, excited to pull from his deep experience building organizations. Since then, he has done just that. As one of the first executive leaders, Steven led the development of our grantmaking work. We asked Steven to reflect on his five years with us through five questions. https://lnkd.in/gzUHD-bX

Community-led organizations in Snohomish County have been working hard to address some of the healthcare needs that directly impact their people. Washington West African Center and the Latino Educational Training Institute are two Inatai grant recipients that share about the need for addressing disparities in healthcare, language access, insurance costs, and more in this article. https://lnkd.in/g8n5dzzz

Happy #FlashbackFriday! Earlier this spring, a few of our colleagues were in Skagit Valley to learn from leaders with Community to Community Development, a grassroots organization led by women of color and farmworkers that works for a just and healthy society. Thanks to Community to Community, our team learned about how they're building collective power with other local organizations and bringing farmworker issues to the forefront.
