Homelessness in California is on everyone’s minds, but it can be hard - or feel overwhelming - to figure out how you can make a difference. Last week, Long Beach residents came together to learn more about the Homecoming Project, and how their community can be part of a creative solution to the prison-to-homelessness pipeline by opening their hearts and homes to people leaving prison. As the Homecoming Project continues to expand in Los Angeles, here’s what Impact Justice’s Bernadette Butler had to say about the impact new hosts can have: “Many of [our participants] went in when they were 17, 18, 19…They’re like tourists here in a world they do not know, in a decade they do not know.” Angelenos who sign up to host Homecoming Project participants are providing a softer landing for people coming home from prison after decades behind bars; a game-changer for participants who are working hard to get back on their feet. Special thanks to our friends at Page Against the Machine for so warmly allowing us into their space for the evening!

We’re proud and honored to be among the twelve innovative programs to partner with AmeriCorps and the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs’ Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention! This support is vital to our California Justice Leaders program, a first-of-it’s-kind partnership with AmeriCorps that trains and places justice-impacted young adults in service years with community-based organizations across the state. “Our members don’t take this commitment lightly,” said Kriss Goss-Marr, Director of Leadership Programs at Impact Justice. “Since launching California Justice Leaders in February 2020, we’ve seen our members provide essential support to hundreds of young people throughout their reentry journeys and on to bright and successful futures. They know that their service as credible messengers creates ripple effects, touching the lives of young people who face the same challenges they once did, making it possible for those same young people to pay it forward in their own communities.”

"It's one thing to hear about excessive force incidents inflicted upon LA County jail residents at the hands of Sheriff's Department personnel. It's another thing to see them." Last year, Impact Justice's Alexander Busansky and Fair and Just Prosecution's Miriam Krinsky co-authored a powerful demand for accountability at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department following the release of video footage documenting staff assaults on incarcerated people. This week, a new piece in WitnessLA lays out the road ahead, and highlights how much work remains to be done. https://lnkd.in/d_CjUq35

With the recent ruling in Grants Pass v. Johnson, cities across the country can now legally penalize people for sleeping outside, even in cases where there is no other option available to them. Far too many people impacted by this SCOTUS decision are caught in a cycle of criminalization – a prison to homelessness pipeline that can be virtually inescapable. The Homecoming Project provides an example for anyone hoping to choose compassion and kindness over cruelty and disengagement in the face of California's ongoing housing crisis. California women’s prisons have now reached deadly temperatures inside. And while incarcerated women are desperately trying to stay cool, as many as 40% are experiencing menopause symptoms at the same time. Going through menopause in prison is too often an excruciating experience, and rising temperatures make the situation far worse. It doesn't have to be this way. Learn more about our work to transform menopause care behind bars at https://lnkd.in/gSFpPA8c.

Impact Justice’s Alexander Busansky calls for more diverse and creative investments in criminal justice reform across the country at a time when funders are increasingly pulling away from these issues. It’s critical to remember: we’re not in a zero sum situation. Funders should keep investing - and investing more - in criminal justice work across the country, without pulling back from places that have seen success. In California and elsewhere, the work is far from over.
