Happy birthday, HR! Born on June 29, 1916, Herman Rottenberg, or "HR," as he was affectionately known by I-House staff, residents, and alumni, enriched the I-House experience for thousands of I-House residents for nearly 50 years. Each June 29, HR hosted a birthday gathering at his home that concluded with musical performances by I-House residents and alumni. In his later years, his birthday was celebrated in the Main Lounge at I-House. When he passed away in 2013, HR had left an incredible legacy at I-House. We are pleased to be honoring him and his contributions to the House during our Centennial Celebrations in the fall of 2024. Over the years, HR also offered considerable personal support to I-House residents in times of need or as they launched their careers in the arts and humanities. In tribute to his enduring legacy, we invite you to consider making a gift in his honor. Your generosity will not only celebrate HR’s life but also support the ongoing mission of I-House, enriching the lives of residents just as HR did for so many years. #100YearsOfCommonGround #IHouseHistory #CentennialCelebrations

Never imagined that a stop by 116th and Broadway in Upper West Side, New York would have such a remarkable effect on carving my ambitions. I’m thrilled to announce that I have graduated from Columbia University with the ‘Student Marshal Award’ for excellence in academic and extracurricular activities! I would like to thank my Professors Alexander Urban, Dan Esposito,Venkat Venkatasubramanian, Bruce Usher, and Raina Ranaghan who kept me centered as I navigated difficult graduate level courses, deep research work and challenging leadership activities. Finally, I am grateful to my family, friends, and to being part of the community at International House, where I made lasting connections with people from across the world.

Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Though President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, abolishing slavery for three million people living in the U.S., over two years passed before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. Juneteenth honors June 19, 1865, the date that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and let those still enslaved there know that they were free. The news was met with joy and the date continued to be celebrated unofficially across the U.S. until, In 2021, Juneteenth was made a federal holiday. Juneteenth is also celebrated outside the United States, both to recognize the end of slavery and to honor the culture and achievements of African Americans. #Juneteenth #BlackHistory #USHistory #juneteenthcelebration #FreedomDay #GlobalCommunity

Happy Pride! Each June, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Each year's events commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 and the beginning of the modern Gay Rights movement. The theme for Pride 2024 is Reflect. Empower. Unite. Drawing inspiration from the activism that sparked the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, the theme urges individuals, advocates, community leaders, and allies to reflect on the obstacles they have worked on together and to drive positive change for our shared future. #Pride #Pride2024 #GlobalCommunity

Sharing the I-House Resident Directories Starting in 1923, I-House produced an annual directory for residents. Over the decades, these publications took a variety of forms, from helpful guidebooks with information on where to find a decent tailor to yearbook-style collections that showcased the events of the previous academic year to address books that encouraged residents to stay in touch with one another once they left I-House. Whatever form they took, the publications celebrated the life of I-House and helped residents and alumni sustain lifelong friendships and connections. Until recently, these directories have been housed in the I-House Archives and have only been accessible to those who have come to New York to visit. Thanks to the support of alumni and friends, I-House has recently digitized all of the available publications produced between 1923 and 2014. Though multiple physical copies of each volume have been retained in the Archives, missing from the collection are publications from 1924, 1935, and 1942-43. Sensitive material has been removed from these public-facing digital versions so that we can share them with you today. Alumni can find their year and search for names on the I-House Resident Directories page. Please enjoy this wonderful glimpse into I-House history! https://buff.ly/4c0o5iO #100YearsOfCommonGround #IHouseAlumni #IHouseHistory #FromTheArchives
