I am humbled to be invited to speak tomorrow at Rice University in Houston, TX for the IEEE Try Engineering Summer Institute. My session will cover my current position, career path, challenges faced and how they were overcome with advice on how to connect with others in industry. A few key points from my session: "Embrace change, don't fear it" "Focus on what is possible, not on what is impossible" "Identify your goals, never stop learning and progressing toward them" "Always look for opportunities to expand your network and ask what you can do to further their goals as well as your own" "Don't wait to be discovered, go discover for yourself" I will cover my entry into industry as a coder, how I faced my fears, overcame obstacles, formed relationships, grew my network, learned to lead from my mentors and conclude with my current path as an advisor to companies providing analysis, recommendations, and helping create paths to achieving their own success. Along the way I got to experience: Flying helicopters Starring in my own TV commercial Being a "Stand-In" for a movie star Learning to fly the Space Shuttle Having lunch in the center of the Pentagon "The best way to test whether a person can lead rather than just manage is to ask them to create positive change" - John C. I wanted to share a recent article I started writing after an IIR Outlook conference I attended. I didn't know that Texas has some of the largest installed solar installations and working through all of the climate change challenges we have had. IEEE Climate Challenge https://lnkd.in/gyH-_YCa is helping to address these changes.

I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to speak this Friday, July 5, 2024, at the esteemed Rice University School of Engineering. In partnership with IEEE TryEngineering, I will be addressing the topic "Who Moved My Cheese in STEM?" as a visiting speaker. This event promises to be an engaging discussion on adapting to change and innovation within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I look forward to sharing insights and strategies that can help navigate the evolving landscape of STEM. April has been a busy month, and kicked off for me with the IEEE Region 5 annual meeting and student competitions. As the IEEE Director for Region 5 I had the pleasure of hosting volunteers and students from our 27 sections and 100 student branches across the Southwest for a weekend of learning, sharing and growing as professionals. This year was extra special, on the 140th anniversary of IEEE, as I had the chance to host all of these fantastic people right here in Northwest Arkansas! Our special guests supported our theme of One #IEEE including Thomas Coughlin (IEEE President) Kathy Herring Hayashi (IEEE Region 6 Director), Sonya Dillard (IEEE REGION 3 DE) and Ed Palacio (IEEE-USA past president ). And we had many stay over for the Great American Eclipse just to top things off! Thank you to all of our R5 volunteers for making the program happen, the IEEE Ozark Section for the incredible work hosting, and Robert Saunders for serving as conference chair and herding all these cool cats.
