How California’s ‘junk fee’ laws could impact legislation nationwide "According to California’s Department of Justice, “the price a Californian sees should be the price they pay.” Now, two bills addressing that — California Senate Bill 478 and Assembly Bill 537 — have come into effect. In recent months, politicians from the state level to the Oval Office have pledged to tackle the issue of “junk fees.” But California’s laws, effective July 1, will constitute “the most effective piece of legislation in the nation to tackle this problem,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta said last Fall. As such, California hotels are now a testing ground for junk fee legislation across the country." California Drops the Hammer on Hidden Fees "While Congress works on passing the Junk Fee Prevention Act for the whole country, California isn’t waiting around. The Golden State’s “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute,” SB 478, goes into effect July 1, making it illegal for businesses to advertise or list a price for goods or services that doesn’t include all mandatory fees or charges. Meeting professionals will appreciate the law’s effect on how hotel pricing is displayed. Sometimes called resort fees, amenity fees, destination fees, urban fees, or facility fees, many hotels currently tack on per-night charges—typically ranging from $25 to $60—that aren’t part of the room rate." "Federal prosecutors in Colorado announced last week a landmark settlement with Marriott over the booking of accessible rooms across the Marriott portfolio. At issue were Marriott hotels’ alleged failure to provide needed detail about ADA accessible hotel rooms and the inability (prior to October 2022) to guarantee an ADA accessible room through Expedia. As part of the settlement, Marriott has agreed, among other things, to list all of its accessible rooms through its centralized booking system, to provide details about each accessible room, to make accessible rooms available through the largest online travel agents (Expedia and Booking.com) and to allow Marriott Bonvoy members to book accessible rooms with points." #SexualHarassment prevention in hospitality: An integrative framework "While sexual harassment is an important issue in every industry, the hospitality sector is plagued by it (Gibson & Guskin, 2017). Sexual harassment is ranked among the most prevalent issues by both hospitality students (Yeung & Pine, 2003) and hospitality employees (Yeung, 2004). Kolmar (2023) shows that between 54 percent and 81 percent of women report experiencing some level of sexual harassment at work. Despite this prevalence, between 58 percent and 72 percent of victims abstain from reporting instances of workplace sexual harassment. Workers in hospitality and food services account for 14 percent of harassment charges. Specifically, women who work for tips as their primary source of income are twice as likely to experience sexual harassment, including from customers."
