This week, the city of Troy, Ohio, and the Troy Historical Society celebrated the 50th Scanniversary of the first scanned Universal Product Code (UPC). On June 26, 1974, a barcode was placed on a pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum and scanned at Marsh Supermarket. With the support of Hobart Food Equipment and Service's weighing and wrapping solutions, the store could also start scanning variable-weighted items like meats, fruits, and vegetables. This marked a pivotal moment in the digital world and revolutionized business operations. The Troy Historical Society presented ITW Food Equipment Group with a Commendation at the dedication ceremony and unveiled a marker to celebrate this historic event. Jennifer Monnin, Vice President and General Manager of Hobart Food Machines, and other Hobart employees were there for the celebration and participated in unveiling the marker.

  • Meet Austin Knoblauch! This Minnesota native has called Ohio home for the last 14 years. During this time, he graduated from Wright State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He has been with Hobart’s Weigh Wrap product line for nearly 6 and a half years. Before working for the product line, he was interning as a Manufacturing Intern before moving up to Troy to spend the next 1 year as a Mechanical Design Intern. Austin says that learning from senior engineers and having growth opportunities keep him working at Hobart. Austin enjoys spending time with his family and friends when he isn't working. He likes to spend time at the lake, watching or playing sports, or cruising around in his Jeep.

Inspired by ITW's "Do More" Agenda, Hobart Service created a fellowship program in 2021 designed to offer expanded career development opportunities for Black and underrepresented students in technical colleges across the United States. Through the program, participants receive educational support, part-time or full-time work and comprehensive training with the goal of becoming full-time food equipment service technicians. Michael Dorsey, a Hobart service technician and member of the inaugural fellowship class, shared, “The program wasn’t only beneficial professionally but also personally. Having my tuition covered and receiving full-time benefits while going to school made a significant difference in my life.” During the fellowship experience, Michael refined a variety of skills under the guidance of a fellow technician. Additionally, he was able to connect with colleagues with diverse backgrounds and foster trust and build relationships with customers. “It's not just about fixing machines; it's about building community,” added Michael. #ProudToBeITW
