On this day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all Hmong-Lao veterans for their service and sacrifice. Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #224, directing the flags of the United States and Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff today, in tribute to Hmong-Lao Veterans Day. During the Vietnam War, Hmong-Lao individuals valiantly served alongside U.S. forces, enduring reprisals from Vietnamese and Lao authorities post-war. Many sought refuge in the U.S., with Wisconsin now hosting the nation's third-largest Hmong community. In 2021, Gov. Evers ratified 2021 Wisconsin Act 31, designating May 14 as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day, commemorating the airlift evacuation's anniversary. This legislation underscores the importance of honoring Hmong-Lao veterans and encourages educational initiatives to recognize their contributions to U.S. military history.
