HMC was honored to host a Pride Month event, book signing, and reception in partnership with the Association for Women in Architecture + Design, Pride by Design, and the book "Out in Architecture" in our Los Angeles office. "Out in Architecture" is a collection of reflections by LGBTQIA+ individuals within and adjacent to the field of architecture. These essays are a cache of struggle, celebration, hope, and wisdom, aiming to propel conversation into action and institutional change. During the event, we heard from contributing authors Amy Karn, AIA, NCARB, CDT and Bz Zhang in conversation with Ismaelly Pena and Lilliana Castro on the queer experience and living as your authentic self in architecture and design. Along with a panel discussion, we enjoyed networking time and book signing by the authors. Thank you to everyone who supported the event! #hmcarchitects #designforgood #happypride

Today, we embark on an exhilarating month-long journey showcasing the Mt. San Antonio College Kinesiology and Athletics Complex, a beacon of architectural and athletic excellence crafted by HMC Architects. Our studio was thrilled to capture this electrifying project in Walnut, California. If you’ve ever been on a shoot with me, you know I’m all about high energy. Stadiums, training centers, Olympic venues—that’s my vibe. In this project, our studio's lens doesn’t just capture images; it seizes the very essence of competitive spirit. The project required a high level of dynamism and adaptability, and our team was dedicated to delivering the best. From architectural photography, video interviews, drone shots, and underwater shots to an Olympic exhibition match between the US and Croatia, we captured it all in one intense day. Join us as we reveal the synergy of well-planned architectural spaces and vibrant athletic performance. https://lnkd.in/eP6JG97F

Today we celebrate #Juneteenth and commemorate the official end of slavery in the United States. As we celebrate, we also take this time to reflect on the history of slavery and its impact on the Black community. Juneteenth is a time to remember the progress we have made and the work that still needs to be done. As designers, we have the power to affect change in our communities by creating inclusive and equitable spaces and promoting diversity in our industry. We recognize that there is more to learn, and even more to unlearn, as we work to design a more just and equitable world. To learn more about Juneteenth, check out these great resources: - Bryan Lee's TEDx talk "Race, Architecture, and Tales for the Hood": Bryan Lee is a renowned architect who presented at HMC last year. In his talk, he explores the intersections between race, architecture, and community, and how they have contributed to the black culture of architecture. https://lnkd.in/eYvcZTi - Architect Magazine's article "Juneteenth And the Black Culture Of Architecture": This article explores the ways in which black architects have contributed to the built environment and how their work has often been overlooked or marginalized. https://lnkd.in/gqqdueeD - The Architect's Newspaper's article about Fort Worth's National Juneteenth Museum: This project aims to create a space that celebrates the history and culture of Juneteenth serves and as a hub for education and community engagement. https://lnkd.in/g8PVDkju - NY Times article "Juneteenth: The History of a Holiday": This article is a great primer for anyone who is unfamiliar with the holiday and wants to learn more. https://lnkd.in/dQP3RmM - Woodbury Grad Demar Matthews' investigation "Discovering a Black Aesthetic in Architecture": HMC's Designing Futures Foundation awarded a grant to support this project which explores the ways in which black architects have contributed to the field and how their work has been viewed through a white lens. https://lnkd.in/g6beQiMG Together, let's continue to celebrate and learn about the history and culture of Juneteenth, and work towards a more just and equitable future. #hmcarchitects #designforgood #Architecture #Equity #DiversityandInclusion #JusticeEquityDiversityInclusion
