July is Disability Pride Month, and we’re highlighting The Arc Central Chesapeake Region. Not only does this organization provide comprehensive health and housing services to individuals with disabilities on Maryland's Eastern Shore, but their behavioral health model challenges us to change how we think about the connection between behavior and health. This holistic approach takes into account the person's entire life, rather than just focusing on their behavior in isolation. Through creative problem-solving and consistent communication, The Arc creates an environment that encourages individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live their daily lives on their terms. https://thearcccr.org/

Helping people experiencing poverty through nonprofit funding
About us
The Weinberg Foundation provides approximately $150 million annually in grants and other activities to support direct services in the areas of Housing, Health, Jobs, Education, and Community Services. Grants serve a range of individuals, including older adults, women at risk and their children, people with disabilities, veterans, and the Jewish community. The Foundation administers the majority of its funding in its priority communities: Baltimore, Hawaiʻi, Israel, New York City, Northeastern Pennsylvania, and San Francisco. This includes supporting nonprofits serving federally designated rural areas within, or adjacent to, these priority communities. All of these locations represent personal ties to the life and legacy of Harry Weinberg, as well as communities where Weinberg Foundation trustees reside and provide leadership.

Our grantee Leading Edge conducted new research specifically focused on Jewish nonprofit boards. This study looked into board effectiveness and governance in the Jewish nonprofit space compared to the broader nonprofit sector and provides actionable steps for Jewish nonprofits looking to improve their effectiveness and governance. https://lnkd.in/e73_cQWm

Earlier this year, our Hawaiʻi grantmaking team gathered grantees and partners serving rural communities across Hawaiʻi to explore opportunities for collaborative learning and advancement of community goals, as part of our broader rural grantmaking efforts. The Weinberg Foundation supports several organizations in rural areas as they strive to bring more resources to their communities; build partnerships across sectors to address local needs; and, ultimately, further advance their mission. Funder and nonprofit gatherings are important opportunities for Weinberg to learn about current challenges and how best to tackle them. Last month, several of our colleagues attended a poverty summit where 15 Jewish funders in New York showcased best-in-class programs and services. One of those programs was grantee Commonpoint Queens, which provides a wide range of services, including job-training and mental health services for youth. https://lnkd.in/ehtFjAa

President and CEO Rachel Monroe discusses women's experiences in the workplace at SRE Network's 2024 convening.
At SRE Network’s 2024 convening earlier this month, I had the pleasure of interviewing Amy Diehl, PhD, gender bias expert and author of Glass Walls: Shattering the Six Gender Bias Barriers Still Holding Women Back at Work. We discussed women’s experiences in the workplace, as well as strategies for how we can break the gender-bias barriers still holding women back. Many thanks to SRE Network for hosting and inviting me to be part of this conversation — and for its important work to create safe workplaces and communal spaces for all in our community!

Yesterday, we were honored to host a conversation between Carla Hayden, the first woman and African American to lead the Library of Congress, and Paula Pretlow, the Weinberg Foundation's board chair. The program also featured a beautiful poem penned by Chrissy Thornton, CEO of Associated Black Charities, on the significance of Juneteenth — an important milestone in our country’s long, difficult, and often painful journey toward forming “a more perfect Union.” We were delighted to have a special Juneteenth display courtesy of the Library of Congress collections, which included replicas of narratives from formerly enslaved Texans talking about emancipation, the Emancipation Proclamation, and photos. Many thanks to the Librarian of Congress for her words of wisdom, humor, and book recommendations — and to all who joined us! Rachel Monroe Nichelle Schoultz Deanna McCray-James, MBA, MS
