When the community shows up like this, excellent things can happen. We hosted the 3rd Annual Debbie Dee backpack drive and it was awesome, we kicked it off with the collection at the center, next hosted an open enrollment, a car show and tied it up with open gym. Thank You Peach Tree, Gates BBQ, Street Kings and Brush Creek Community Center. What a wonderful weekend!

Hello Everyone! The series on trades is the best program period. Let’s give another Hi5 to “US Engineering!” The fellas went to the KState school of architecture today. This helps them understand what they saw last week at US Engineering. They look forward to JE Dunn in August so we can tie all this up.

Congrats to our Founder and President
Henry W. Wash is in the Hall-Of-Fame and a philanthropist in Kansas City. He is the originator of High Aspirations founded in 2003, a mentoring program that supports Black Males at a 1 to 7 mentor to mentee ratio socially, emotionally, academically and spiritually. Mr. Wash served as a mentor and board member from 2003 to 2013. He walked away from careers he mastered in freight and Division of Youth Service to pursue his calling, HA full-time in 2013. Wash has transformed a once blighted area into the cities first mentoring campus for Black young men. He has begun the Henry, Trina and Laurianna Wash scholarship fund, where he grants scholarships to the young men that finish High Aspirations. Henry has over 26 years of expertise in designing, implementing, and evaluating programming for at-risk populations. A few of Mr. Wash’s educational accomplishments include an Associate degree in Applied Science, Associate degree in Arts, Bachelor’s in Sociology, Minor in Black Studies, and Master of Public Administration in Urban Affairs. Mr. Wash is a National Member of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honors Society, Humanitarian of the year 2024 and UMKC’s 2024 Alumni Defying the Odds Award recipient.

Shoutout to Mr. Jacob Handy for his work because of him, High Aspirations has embraced every aspect of gardening. In result, some of High Aspirations young men had a chance to visit the George Washington Carver National Monument on “National Carver Day.” Commitment comes before anything else in a leaders life. Purpose and perspective tie into commitment with clarity. “You can count how many seeds that are in one apple, but can you count how many apples that are in a seed?” In short you never know which one of these young men will bear the most fruit. We are planting seeds at High Aspirations.

Intentional counseling parallels the concepts of caring and empathy, so important to effective counseling. What would you say if we said High Aspirations has hosted over 3,000 hours of Intentional Counseling Sessions? We host group session every time we meet with our young men. This is also paired with the mentoring they receive each week. Youth are able to tell us what is on their heart or mind for this matter and it is so impactful. In the end they become healthier and grow to be better individuals.
