About us
The House of the Good Shepherd was founded in 1872 in Utica, New York to help meet the needs of local children and families. Since then, The House has evolved with the changing child welfare system. We have grown into a comprehensive human service agency providing treatment to more than 600 children and their families a year. Our goal is to help children and families, who are struggling with serious emotional, social and behavioral problems, discover their ability to succeed. Children and families who arrive at The House often have exhausted every available option for remaining together. Our main location is on a 27-acre campus at 1550 Champlin Avenue in Utica, New York. The House currently employs 400 full- and part-time staff and has more than 200 volunteers and student interns. The House of the Good Shepherd is classified as a non-sectarian, non-profit corporation, and is designated as a 501(c)3 charitable institution. We provide services without regard to ethnicity, religion, or financial status.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of four outstanding individuals at Tilton School who have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone. Through dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of hard work, they have successfully passed their regents and earned their diplomas. Each of these graduates has shown exceptional commitment to their education, and now they are ready to embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives. Whether they are entering the workforce or pursuing higher education, we know they will continue to achieve great things. Congratulations to you, and thank you to all the staff for helping them get to this point.

What an incredible way to start the day at our golf tournament yesterday! We had an amazing time with some special treats for all our participants. Here’s a recap of the exclusive perks we offered: VIP Patio: This is the perfect spot to relax before the tournament. It is complete with a luxurious cigar bar, massage therapists on-site to help you unwind and relieve any tension, a Bloody Mary station, and live Music, which all set the perfect ambiance for an unforgettable experience. And a big shoutout to all our players, each of whom received a premium pair of FootJoy golf shoes. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the event so special! We can’t wait to do it all again next year.

An "All-Star" effort! Yesterday, the Syracuse Mets and Northland Communications partnered for "Good Neighbor Day" at NBT Bank Stadium. Twenty-four participating non-profits, including The House, conducted fundraising campaigns for 90 days to compete for three top prizes. At the start of last night's game, the winners were announced, and The House was awarded the top prize of $10,000 in recognition of our successful fundraising efforts. In honor of this award, Lee Bjornland, Assistant Director of Development, was invited onto the field to throw out the first pitch! We are grateful to our partners at Northland Communications for this donation and ongoing support of our mission of changing children's lives, as well as to our other loyal donors who made significant contributions to this campaign. #GoodNeighborDay #syracuseMets
