About us
Heartland Forward is a nonpartisan, nonprofit "think and do tank. Our mission is to improve economic performance in the center of the United States by advocating for fact-based solutions to foster job creation, knowledge-based and inclusive growth, and improved health outcomes. We are achieving our mission through independent, data-driven research; action-oriented discussion; and impactful policy recommendations. Heartland Forward is unique in that it is exclusively focused on the Heartland region. We think a cross-cutting view is critical to solving the region's challenges. While recognizing the differences between places in the center of the country, we analyze the region holistically to identify common issues and solutions. We believe the Heartland, the core of America, is a storehouse of potential and possibility.

We had the great privilege of hosting three impactful mayors during our panel “The Secret Sauce: What Makes a Dynamic Metro” at the 92nd annual United States Conference of Mayors. Check out some of our favorite clips from the panel on how these mayors view their own “secret sauces”. Mayor David Holt of City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma explained what it meant to be mission-focused, saying “Everyone is on this ‘team OKC’ and this relentless drive for growth and progress.”

Mayor Barbara Buffaloe from the City of Columbia, Missouri shared the benefits of being a university city in the heartland, adding it “brings a vibrancy to the community because we have such a young population and we have so many cultural events going on.”

Check out some of our favorite clips from the panel on how these mayors view the “secret sauce” of their cities. Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. from the City of Little Rock, Arkansas understood the need to rely on the city’s existing strengths to rebound from the pandemic, recalling that Little Rock “had to laser focus on ‘how do we better develop our small businesses?’” to bolster the backbone of their economic system.

At Heartland Forward, we recognize the evolution of talent development–and we embrace it. As Ross DeVol says in this clip from the 92nd annual United States Conference of Mayors, “We are in a battle for talent.” As we continue to promote investment in human capital, it looks like a battle we can win. See all of the ways that we support investment in human capital by looking through our programs on our website: https://lnkd.in/e_wb_7fk
