About us

The Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN) is a nationally recognized collaboration of more than 65+ health systems leveraging their institutional assets more intentionally to improve health and well-being by addressing economic and racial inequities in the communities they serve. HAN works to achieve a critical mass of health systems adopting the anchor mission, a proactive commitment to leverage their economic, political, and human capital in partnership with community to drive equitable, local economic impact. Through defining the healthcare leadership standard, promoting industry collaboration, incubating and scaling anchor strategies, and leading innovations in implementation, HAN strives to build a healthcare and anchor institution movement focused on addressing economic and racial inequities in community conditions that create poor health.

  • Last month in Philadelphia, we officially released our latest publication Activating Place-based Partnerships for Equitable Economic Development: a Playbook for Anchor Collaboratives. This week, we’re thrilled to highlight Philadelphia Anchors for Growth and Equity (PAGE), a multi-sector anchor collaborative and initiative of the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia. Under the leadership of Kenyatta James, PAGE approaches community wealth building through the Impact Purchasing strategy, which aims to increase contracts between anchor institutions and local, minority-owned businesses in Philadelphia. PAGE has investigated what it takes to remove barriers that prevent local, minority-owned businesses from bidding on or getting contracts with large institutions. PAGE works with its anchor members to examine internal contracting policies and identify opportunities to increase spending with local, minority-owned businesses, while also providing coaching and grants for local businesses to build capacity and become contract-ready. PAGE overall has supported $50M in minority-owned business contracts, and in partnership with ImpactPHL and American Sustainable Business Network PAGE has also deployed $237,000 in catalytic grants that helped unlock 26 new contracts for 13 minority-owned businesses in Philadelphia. We’re proud to share that two HAN members, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Jefferson Health, are founding members of PAGE, alongside several other philadelphia-based anchor institutions. • Our Anchor Collaborative Spotlight this week is West Side United, a collaborative of healthcare anchor institutions and community partners focused on community health and economic vitality on Chicago’s west side. For WSU partners, the north star is closing the life expectancy gap between neighborhoods in Chicago just miles apart. To do this, WSU partners use a cross-sector, place-based strategy to address inequality in healthcare, education, economic vitality and the physical environment. For example, as part of their place-based investing strategy, WSU partners have collectively invested $16.28 million in Community Development Financial Institutions, which in turn have provided capital to community-supported West Side projects through more than 625 loans. These investments have contributed to the creation and preservation of 901 housing units; the creation of fifty-two supportive housing beds; the construction and preservation of more than 772,404 square feet of nonprofit, residential, and commercial real estate projects; and have supported 505 construction jobs, preserved 566 local jobs, and created 125 community employment opportunities. Shout out to WSU founding hospitals and HAN members Rush University System for Health, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and Ascension plus the many other partners and WSU staff who make this work happen. Thank you and kudos to our affiliate member Health Foundation of South Florida.

We are so proud to share that the South Florida Anchor Alliance has been featured in Activating Place-based Partnerships for Equitable Economic Development: A Playbook for Anchor Collaboratives.  According to David Zuckerman, President & Founder of the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN), “When I started in this work more than a decade ago, the phrase anchor collaborative did not exist. The idea that individual anchor institutions should intentionally leverage all of their assets—including their hiring, purchasing, investing, real estate, and voice—in concerted partnership with their peers and the community to improve economic mobility and build community wealth was not part of the conversation. Fast forward to today, and this idea has taken root in cities across the country.” The South Florida Anchor Alliance, a collaboration of 20 of the largest organizations and municipalities in South Florida, is one such example of an anchor collaborative that is intentionally leveraging all of their assets to improve economic mobility. Health Foundation Chief Strategy Officer, Janisse Schoepp, contributed to the playbook and served as a reviewer. She shares, “The importance of this Playbook is that it highlights national models of anchor collaboratives and disseminates lessons learned for other groups thinking about establishing their own anchor collaborative in their community. To be highlighted as one of the models nationally is very exciting and important in advancing the understanding of an emerging and promising approach to addressing social determinants of health and creating healthier communities.”  We applaud the Healthcare Anchor Network for their work on the playbook and thank Janisse for her contributions to the effort. #SouthFloridaAnchorAlliance, #SFAARegionalMarketplace, #HealthFoundationSouthFlorida, #HealthcareAnchorNetwork

Last week, we had the privilege of joining our partners at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) and the St. Louis Anchor Action Network (STLAAN) in St. Louis. The focus? Continuing to strengthen collaborative efforts between educational institutions, healthcare organizations and other stakeholders. Why does this cross-sector partnership matter? By working together, these major employers and economic engines ("anchor institutions") can drive real impact in building more inclusive local economies. What does it look like? Creating new jobs, supporting small businesses, and opening up opportunities for underrepresented communities. Too often, racial and economic inequities persist due to systemic barriers. But anchor institutions like universities and hospitals have a unique ability to dismantle those barriers through purposeful hiring, workforce training, local procurement, and strategic investments. Members of the Healthcare Anchor Team presented on why and how we use data to measure impact and progress in the main anchor mission pillars: hiring, purchasing and investment. An additional presentation covered leveraging community partnerships to foster equitable local economic development that support healthy communities. It also discussed using measurement frameworks to evaluate and reinforce collaborative efforts between health systems and community partners. 🙏 In gratitude for our partners! Christopher M. Nolan, FACHE Stefani Weeden-Smith Valerie Holton
