Talladega College announces the difficult decision to discontinue its gymnastics program after just one year due to limited resources 😔 "While the decision to discontinue the gymnastics program was undoubtedly difficult, we remain incredibly proud of our gymnasts, coaches, and their remarkable achievements. Their dedication and resilience have set a high standard, and their legacy will continue to inspire," said Interim President Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough 🗣 Talladega College made history by becoming the second HBCU to offer gymnastics, following Fisk University. Freshman Kyrstin Johnson, who won the USGA national title in vault, shared her experience: "I feel like now that I’m at Talladega, I can actually be free to be myself." 🤸🏾♂️❤️ Vice President and Athletic Director Loretta Martin expressed her admiration: "Our gymnasts' and coaches' dedication, skill, and spirit have been nothing short of inspiring. While the decision to discontinue the program was incredibly tough, it’s clear that the strides we’ve made will ultimately strengthen Talladega College as a whole." ✍🏾 The gymnastics program will officially close on July 31, but the legacy of these athletes will live on. The team has launched a crowdfunding campaign to save the program, already reaching nearly $12,000 of its $500,000 goal. Let’s support them in their efforts! 💪🏾 #HBCUBUZZ #TalladegaCollege

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the oldest historically Black college in the United States (HBCU) is no longer on probation. According to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the university has had its accreditation reaffirmed after the commission placed the school on probation last November due to alleged "insufficient evidence" that it complied with multiple university standards. In a statement released Monday, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania expressed gratitude to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) for reviewing its accreditation and removing the university from probation status. Cheyney says the decision is seen as a validation of the university's commitment to maintaining high standards of academic and operational excellence. The university says MSCHE has requested that the school submit a customary monitoring report, due March 1, 2025, as a part of its accreditation action. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has responded to Norfolk State University sprinter Kai Cole’s claim that the conference failed to sanction an event that ultimately disqualified him from the Olympic trial competition. Cole, a fifth-year senior at NSU, ran a conference-best 10.05 in the 100-meter dash, which would have placed him in a qualifying position. However, his automatic qualifying time was rejected by the United States Track and Field (USATF) organization because the event he ran the qualifying time in, the 2024 MEAC championships, was not sanctioned by the USATF. Cole released a statement on his social media expressing his disappointment in the decision. He shared that he had filed an appeal that was denied. Norfolk State also released a statement and says they stand firmly behind Kai and will continue to provide our unwavering support as he navigates these challenges.
