In 2022, Google introduced the Gen AI chatbot Bard (now Gemini). Despite the promise of Gen AI, during Bard’s debut, it generated a major factual error about the James Webb Space Telescope. This error ultimately led to a 9% drop in Alphabet’s stock. Issues like these are the “epistemic risk of botshit.” Botshit is made-up, inaccurate, and untruthful chatbot content that humans uncritically use for tasks. Failing to manage these risks can lead to: 🚩Reputational damage 🚩Incorrect decisions 🚩Legal liability 🚩Economic loss 🚩Human safety concerns 🤖ChatGPT assisted with drafting this LinkedIn post.
