So incredibly proud of our CONNECT team for presenting this important research at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting of 2024! Thank you to Jihan Ryu and Janice Ng, MPA for presenting!
We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback from trainees to community psychiatrists on our pilot program results at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting at 2024! A pilot outpatient care model funded by NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and NYC Office of the Mayor, Hamilton-Madison House's CONNECT program is a community outreach focused mental health program, primarily geared towards underserved populations in downtown New York City who frequently fall into access gaps (housing, benefits, justice system involvement, debilitating physical health etc). We present initial results pooled from August 2022 to February 2024 that patients enrolled in our program stay in treatment, use emergency room and crisis calls less, and show appreciation for flexibility and continuity from the treatment team to meet their mental health goals! Thank you to co-authors Janice Ng, MPA, Tse-Chien Chen, Jiayue Mao, Fanny Kuang, LMHC for contributing to research, current/past team members Danielle Baum, Alice Tsao, Jeff Huang, Jamie Marrara, Esther Li, Paige Kim for the outstanding work on (literally!) the ground, and Mike Zhou & Lilya Berns, MS, OTRL for program supervision that allows our work to continue! Check out this incredible podcast from Analiza Wolf, featuring our Executive Director, Isabel Ching, LMSW!
How can we network while staying true to ourselves? For this Women of Color Rise episode, I talk with Isabel Ching, LMSW, Executive Director of Hamilton-Madison House. Born in South America, Isabel moved to Brooklyn, New York where she grew up. In school, she was bullied for being Asian American and put in an ESL class even though she spoke English fluently. Even with these challenges, Isabel shares how she stayed to her identity. As the leader of her organization, she continues to lead, speak at events, and fundraise in harmony with her culture. Isabel shares how to network and present authentically: 1. Get help - If networking and presenting are not a natural skill of yours, seek external help. A good consultant can help you build your executive presence. 2. Decide on what advice to accept - Don’t blindly follow all advice given to you. Ground yourself in your values and who you are. For Isabel, sometimes she’s giggly, jokes around, and uses her hands alot - that’s ok! 3. Take the pressure off - Sometimes Isabel feels like she needs to say something profound and unique, but that brings unnecessary stress. It’s ok not to be the smartest or most eloquent. Know who you are and speak from that place. You don’t need to prove anything. 4. It’s ok to fail - Isabel admits that she has had some misses, including a presentation that went terribly because she was up all night with her sick son. Give yourself compassion and grace. 5. Let go of control - There's only so much you can control. You can’t control what people think about you. If one person is not interested, move on. Keep doing this and you’ll get to the right person who will give you a chance. Isabel is featured in my upcoming book, The Myths of Success: A Woman of Color's Guide to Leadership. We were so lucky to have you Frank Belarge! Thanks for the incredibly kind words and the volunteer efforts!
Had an amazing and emotional day touring and supporting all the great volunteers delivering food packages to the residents of the Hamilton-Madison House site. Touring and seeing the children in the classrooms, the families in the residences, the tremendous pride of the organization, and the enormous needs was the perfect way to start the Holiday Season the day before Thanksgiving. The drive, dedication, and sincerity displayed was heartfelt. The pride displayed for the playground, Jim’s Gym, the garden area which will be connecting the children’s programming with the Senior’s programming was inspiring. Looking forward to continuing supporting this very special organization which is dedicated to being there for the full spectrum of life; from their pre-school programs through senior citizen resident programs.
