National Weather Service (NWS) officials confirmed that a powerful derecho impacted communities across the Midwest on July 15, producing at least 19 tornados in the Chicagoland area and Indiana. Although tornadoes are most common in the Central Plains and South, the NWS cautions that strong storm systems have the capability to produce tornados in any of the 50 States. Tornadoes pose potential threats to persons and properties as they may damage structures, uproot trees, and displace heavy objects. These dangerous conditions associated with tornadic activity make it critical for individuals to understand how to safeguard and protect their household in the event of a tornado.
