An overwhelming amount of people spend 2-10 years debating about working with a financial advisor. But the surprising part? People associate "working" with "meeting," which couldn't be further from the truth. It's okay to meet with an advisor. It's okay to ask them a few questions. It's okay to have the intent to work with one, only to realize you're not ready. It's okay to speak to one and have interest in meeting another. It's okay to speak with several and feel overwhelmed by the options. It's okay to not know what questions to ask. It's okay to not speak the finance language. It's okay to prefer an advisor that doesn't work with your parents. It's okay to only meet with your advisor virtually. It's okay to kick off the call with "idk why I'm here, but I know I need help." It's okay to use an advisor as a third party between you & your spouse. What's not okay? Putting yourself in financial harm because you're too nervous to meet with someone who is ready and available to help. If this is you, do me a favor and just speak to a financial advisor or two. DM them on LinkedIn, go to the plethora of marketplaces out there (I'm biased to Habits Inc...), meet with the one who works with your parents, talk to the one in the branch around the corner, there are 400,000+ of them out there. Financial insecurity is a massive problem in this day and age. Please just talk to someone who might be able to help. At least then you'll find comfort in knowing what to do when the time is right. Alright...emotional post is done.

You can’t just jog through life. At 7AM, I’d show up to Techstars, bleary-eyed & determined, ready to absorb everything the program had to offer. From pitch practice to founder talks to one-on-ones with mentors. By 10 PM, when most people were heading home, my real work was just beginning. The hours between 10 PM and 2 AM became sacred—it was when I'd apply everything I'd learned that day. I'd frantically scribble notes during talks, then stay up late implementing new strategies for Habits. Tweaking our onboarding flow at midnight, or revising our pitch deck early in the early hours of the morning. I pushed myself to the absolute limit day after day. When I was bootstrapping, I was determined to make the most of every single minute. Was it sustainable long-term? Absolutely not. But sometimes in life, you have to go all-in, even if it means sacrificing sleep and sanity for a small period. Life is a marathon, but don’t be afraid to sprint.

Tell me a story about your craziest workday: Mine started at 2AM in Vietnam, and I'm on a call with financial advisors back in New York. The hotel room is dimly lit, my laptop screen the only source of light as I discuss market trends from halfway around the world. My journey building Habits has been filled with moments like these — boarding flights in Nuremberg while explaining our platform to curious families, closing deals in between connections. Startups often sound glamorous, but the reality is far from it. Building a company is exhausting, disorienting, and at times, lonely. But these experiences gave us something invaluable — an intimate understanding of our customers that no other research could provide. In the past two years, I've personally spoken to over 1,500 financial advisors and more than 2,000 families. Each conversation, whether at odd hours or in unusual locations, added another piece to the puzzle that’s now known as Habits. This hands-on approach is now a major competitive advantage. While other fintech startups were relying on algorithms, we built relationships with customers. Now, our customers feel like a family. ******** That's why for limited time you can book 1v1 time with me to help you find a financial advisor. I got 5 spots left this month! www.usehabits.com

It amazes me how fast our marketplace has grown in the last year. For perspective, we had a dozen families find their financial advisor through Habits Inc. in July ‘23… And a year later we have thousands. (Hundreds of which found us through my LinkTree or our free resources to download) It makes you wonder what July ‘25 will look like!

I left college without a job. While my classmates were celebrating their new roles at prestigious firms, I was learning to sell Cutco knives. It wasn't the future I had envisioned for myself. Then, I got a call from JP Morgan. It felt like a lifeline — a chance to step outside my comfort zone and prove myself. I took it, grateful for the opportunity and ready to dive in. But as the years went by, I couldn't shake this nagging feeling. Despite the stability and success, something was missing. I dreamed of building something of my own. The golden handcuffs of corporate life were starting to feel heavy. At 27, I made a decision that would change everything — I left JP Morgan even though I knew I’d be letting down my friends and family. To my surprise, they were supportive. They recognized that this was the path that would make me happiest, even if it wasn't the most conventional one. The journey hasn't been easy. There have been late nights, moments of doubt, and plenty of obstacles. But every step of the way, I've been driven by the belief that we owe it to ourselves to take a leap of faith. Sometimes the greatest risk is not taking one.

I think there’s a lot of people in the startup world who offer advice that aren’t really doing the damn thing. And then those who do are incredibly hard to relate to. Maybe they were employee #2 at Uber or their startup raised $10M out of the gate. Very few people are reluctant to share when they’re in the thick of it. I'm changing that... Two years ago, I left my “dream job.” And let me tell you — the conversation with my parents wasn’t easy. They worked hard to give me every opportunity, and here I was, walking away from JP Morgan. But I felt a deep obligation to seize an opportunity that few in my family had ever had. I graduated college debt-free, landed a six-figure job, and was set up for success. Yet something inside me felt empty. As I prepared to break the news to my parents, I explained to them, "You've given me an opportunity neither of you had. I owe it to you to do what is going to make me happy." My parents always encouraged to explore my passions and take risks. I felt a responsibility to step outside my comfort zone and pursue something radically different. Hard conversations can be more difficult than building companies. To be vulnerable with the people we love most is not easy. This lesson applies to all aspects of life, especially our finances. The lesson? Don’t be afraid to take risks. It’s far more risky to suffer in silence.
