Bold. Grand. Inspired.
About us
Grand St. Settlement connects New Yorkers with opportunities that inspire, services that keep families strong and programs that bring communities closer. We've been inviting New Yorkers to join us in building the communities we need for a century; when we opened our doors in 1916 we served the Lower East Side, but today we connect more than 10,000 New Yorkers on both sides of the Williamsburg Bridge, including Williamsburg, Bushwick, East New York, Brownsville, and Bed-Stuy. Our Community Centers, partner schools and Child & Family Centers are vibrant, safe, and inclusive, creating a home away from home that reflects the cultures and wisdom of the communities' diverse experiences.

Thank you to The School of The New York Times for joining CEO Robert Cordero on the Lower East Side to learn more about the work we do at Grand Street!
So happy to host Zaina Arafat and her students from The School of The New York Times at Grand Street Settlement. We talked about the history of settlement houses and the Lower East Side, which is very much the history of migration, culture, advocacy and progress in New York City. Our future is bright with these worldly journalism students and it’s a true highlight to do this annually! The New York Times

This time of year is always a joy as our Pre-K students step up to Kindergarten. We are so proud of their hard work, but equally as proud of the incredible teams at our Child and Family Centers throughout Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. Thank you to the teachers, family advocates, site directors, and all the staff who support the children and families in our programs and set them up for a lifetime of success!

Happy anniversary to our intrepid leader Robert Cordero!
On June 22, 2015 I started the career adventure of a lifetime with Grand Street Settlement. I’m astonished by how we have grown and the remarkable impact of our mission-driven work for our communities. To so many friends, colleagues, supporters, board members and mentors (+ my amazing family)— THANK YOU for believing in me & looking forward to facing many opportunities and challenges ahead, together. Grateful to Bryan Koplin, Ralph Rose, Kenneth W. Liebman, Sylvia Montero, Andy Celli, Willing Irene Chin-Ma, Thanh Bui, Maria C. DeJesus, Bindu, Elsa Pereira, Clovis Thorn and so many others ❤️… Let’s keep expanding opportunities for New Yorkers. I posted an anniversary pic from my first day- with a money tree gift from my board of directors to many special moments in the month of June from throughout the years. 💕 Can you guess the year from the photos?

We were pleased to host Rep. Daniel Goldman as he announced the PROSPER Act, a new piece of legislation proposing over $100 Million in funding to curb gun violence and incarceration among young people in our communities. Communities of color bear the brunt of gun violence in New York City. We need more funding for local, community based organizations to fight the root causes of gun violence by providing mental health counseling, career development, and engaging and safe afterschool programming. Thank you Rep. Goldman for standing with our community. We're also grateful for Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Basaime Spate of the Street Action Network, Shaina Harrison of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, as well as coalition partners Henry Street Settlement, University Settlement Society of New York, Red Hook Initiative, and Center for Family Life in Sunset Park for your work to keep our young people safe.

We joined Council Member Rita Joseph, Chair of the Education Committee, Council Member Justin Brannan, Chair of the Finance Committee, Council Member Jennifer Gutierrez, and many more electeds, community based organizations, and advocates to call on NYC Office of the Mayor to fully fund Universal 3K. Thousands of children who need high-quality child care do not have access. Thousands of children with disabilities cannot get the support they need. Thousands of families are considering leaving the City due to rising child care costs and thousands more are being pushed into poverty just to care for their children. We need a fully funded Universal 3K and Pre-K system to support working families throughout New York City.

#Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States and recognizes the importance of continuing to advocate for equal rights for Black Americans. Grand Street is proud to close our offices today in order to give staff and participants the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate this holiday. Check out this video with Deputy Director of Manhattan Youth Programs Maurice Rawls reflecting on the history and importance of Juneteenth.
