In light of the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) recently adopted amendments to Regulation S-P pertaining to #IncidentResponse, I have a few #cyber tips for firms like registered investment advisers and broker-dealers. - A firm's incident response plan should no longer be centric network perimeter given the significant shift to cloud and SaaS providers as well as the much more mobile workforce over the last decade; incident response plans need to more specifically consider situations like business email compromise (BEC) attacks and multi-factor authentication (MFA) bypass attacks. Firms should also think a lot more about their supply chain and how they can minimize the second or third-order impacts of a vendor being compromised. - Anyone can have a foundational incident response plan in place, even if there is little or no budget in place for it. There is a plethora of materials freely provided by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Center for Internet Security (CIS) that include incident response plan materials, tabletop exercises as well as various tools to help evaluate one's security posture.
