In November 2020, the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) released Defining the Mental Wellness Economy, which was the first ever study to clearly define mental wellness as separate from mental health, and to define and quantify the mental wellness industry. Mental wellness was most recently measured by GWI as a $181 billion global industry in 2022. In conjunction with the release of our new Wellness Policy Toolkit: Mental Wellness, our data feature for June focuses on the background and context for GWI’s economic data on the mental wellness sector. We provide an overview of our mental wellness time series data for 2019-2022 (and projecting forward to 2027), along with some insights on how to interpret and use the data – specifically focusing on what the data do, and do not, capture. Exercise is medicine! There are decades of evidence showing that physical activity leads to healthier, longer lives. But researchers are just starting to build a picture of the vast maze of cellular and molecular processes that are triggered throughout the body during, and even after, a workout. Some of these processes dial down inflammation, whereas others ramp up cellular repair and maintenance. Exercise also prompts cells to release signaling molecules that carry a frenzy of messages between organs and tissues: from muscle cells to the immune and cardiovascular systems, or from the liver to the brain Discover more must-read insights from the wellness world here: https://hubs.li/Q02D2f7T0 #ExerciseIsMedicine #HealthAndWellness #PhysicalActivity #HealthyLiving #Longevity #Wellness

A new study from Cedars-Sinai and other global researchers (using data from 400,000 people) evaluated the differences in the effects of exercise between men and women. It found that women who do strength training exercises two to three days a week are more likely to live longer and have a 30% lower risk of death from heart disease, compared to women who do none. The researchers noted that “we don't have many things that reduce mortality in that way,” and that both aerobic and weight training should be prescribed for women. While the study finds that even small doses of exercise are beneficial for everyone, the data shows that women need less exercise than men to get the same longevity gains. Women who did moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, five times a week, reduced their risk of premature death by 24%, compared to 18% for men.
