Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

About us

Girls Inc. of the Island City (GIIC) is an award-winning after-school program that serves an ethnically and economically diverse population of girls, ages 6-18. GIIC’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong (healthy), smart (educated), and bold (independent) through innovative programs, activities, and advocacy. We are an affiliate of Girls Inc., a national, nonprofit organization. Since 1964, we have empowered more than 30,000 girls in the city of Alameda to realize their potential as fearless, goal-oriented young women. Our research-based programming focuses on the development of the whole girl. Trained staff and volunteers build lasting, mentoring relationships in girls-only spaces that are physically and emotionally safe. Girls find a sisterhood of support with shared drive, mutual respect, and high expectations to help realize successful frameworks for their futures. GIIC provides over 600 girls annually with comprehensive programming in the following areas: Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); reading, writing, and economic literacy; art, music, and drama; nutritional, physical, social and emotional health and wellness; college, vocational education, and career preparation; positive image and identity; and leadership and life skills. GIIC alumnae go on to become savvy professionals, thoughtful leaders, and caring community advocates. We make a difference: 100% of GIIC members graduate from high school. 90% of GIIC members attend a two- or four-year college or vocational school. We also provide licensed childcare for boys and girls for kindergarten-fifth grade at five Alameda Public Schools. This service is called Alameda Island Kids.

☀️Summer Camp at Girls Inc. is all about adventure, discovery, and fun! This week, the girls went on an exciting field trip to the Academy of Sciences, one of many they will take this summer. They explored everything the academy has to offer, diving into the wonders of marine life, marveling at vibrant coral reefs, and discovering the ancient world of jellyfish. They also explored the living roof, learned about sustainable architecture, felt the excitement of the Shake House, and even visited the rainforest exhibit! These kinds of exposures to science are so important for inspiring curiosity and a love for learning. The girls learned so much and had a blast! 🌍 🩵

  • Juneteenth is more than just a celebration; it’s a reminder that justice can win over oppression. It makes us think about what true freedom means in a world still affected by racial injustice. Let’s renew our promise to create a society where freedom and equality are real for everyone. As adults, we have a crucial role in this. It’s up to us to educate our children about Juneteenth and its powerful message. By sharing the history and significance of this day, we help them understand the ongoing fight for racial justice. Let’s use this moment to instill values of justice, equality, and freedom in our kids, ensuring that these ideals become a reality for everyone.

  • On this Father’s Day, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Matt Bliven, a dedicated father, our board member for the past 6 years, and a true champion for Girls Inc. of the Island City. "My role as a father to Emily now involves supporting her wholeheartedly as a 30-year-young adult who is pursuing a career in engineering, navigating her personal interests, and exploring the world with gusto. I feel lucky to have witnessed and contributed to her personal empowerment through sharing activities and passions together like music, soccer, skiing, running, cycling, and hiking that encouraged her sense of community and instilled self-worth. I would wish the same for all girls of the Island City." ―Matt Bliven 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐘 𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑’𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘! From all of us at Girls Inc. of the Island City
