About us

Girl Up is a girl-centered leadership development initiative, focusing on equity for girls and women in spaces where they are unheard or underrepresented. We believe when girls and women are in positions of influence, they work to create a more just and equitable world for everyone. Girl Up operates a global network of regional affiliates reaching 315,000 girls in 155 countries. We deliver evidence-based leadership development training through our girl-led Clubs, programs, and events. As members of a global movement, girls are a force for social good — connected to a Community of their peers who are advocating for policy change and advancing gender justice. Founded in 2010 and hosted by the United Nations Foundation, Girl Up welcomes girls and youth of all gender identities to start a Club and join our movement to advance gender justice worldwide. Together, we are expanding girls’ skills, rights, and opportunities to lead, and changing the face of leadership for generations to come.

We were thrilled to honor long-time Girl Up advocate, Shaun Robinson, for her commitment to our collective mission of achieving gender justice! We were also excited to honor Girl Up alum Kavita Rai, Co-Founder of Ethos, for her work as a women’s health advocate and social changemaker. • 🌟 Leader Spotlight 🌟 Girl Up USA Leader & International #MartialArts Champion Tahirah received a #GirlUp Sports for a Purpose Scholarship last year, using the funding to highlight the experiences of female athletes on her college campus and the intersections between #Sports, #GenderEquity, and #MentalHealth. "My participation in sports has positively impacted my overall physical, mental, and emotional health. From being a strong reliever of stress, to the friends I’ve met along my journey, to the places visited, sports has provided balance within my life. I hope to show young girls that they never have to give up on their sports dream. Despite the circumstances and what others might say—whether it’s facing stereotypes and gender norms, balancing academics, or recovering from an injury—with perseverance and grit, there is always a way to continue doing what you love." • ✨ Club Spotlight ✨ Girl Up Kuwait held its first in-person event last month, "Future Women Leaders Panel and Workshop," to raise awareness among young girls in Kuwait about the participation of women in society & politics and the importance of youth in such spaces! 🙌 The reason for hosting this event? "In many countries, including Kuwait, women face significant barriers to full participation in society and politics. By bringing together established leaders who have carved their paths...we hoped to educate young girls about the importance of women's roles in shaping society and inspire them to pursue these positions," said #GirlUp Kuwait Club President Jiye. We love to see multiple generations of leaders paving the way for a better future together! 😍👏 Girl Up MENA

“Everyone has a story to tell,” says #NatGeoExplorer Andrea Villarreal Rodriguez. The documentarian and educator finds inspiration in her local community of young storytellers and climate activists, while working to protect a local water supply system in Mexico. Villarreal Rodriguez approaches local problems as she seems to with most challenges: with regard for the possibilities. “My role is being an organizer, a guide, but also a visual storyteller. I love telling stories about hope and resilience and trying to navigate that really thin line between urgency and optimism.” More on how Villarreal Rodriguez localizes climate storytelling in her native Monterrey: https://lnkd.in/er3s4icY Photo by Susana Scott Ayala
