GFF exists to accelerate a cure for NF1 and grow opportunity and equity in Detroit and our home cities.

About us

The Gilbert Family Foundation is a private nonprofit foundation founded by philanthropists Dan and Jennifer Gilbert to address their two priorities and passions: accelerating a cure for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and transforming the city of Detroit, Michigan. The Foundation has embarked on two bold, high risk/high reward NF1 research initiatives: (1) the Gene Therapy Initiative (GTI), to develop curative therapies that address the underlying genetic abnormalities in NF1 patients, and (2) the Vision Restoration Initiative (VRI), inspired by their son’s loss of vision from NF1 and with a goal of advancing vision restoration therapies.

  • It was an incredible opportunity to have the NFL Draft in #Detroit this year. Equally amazing were NFL Draft block parties hosted by several community organizations. These events were created to not only celebrate the draft, but the city we call home. We were proud to support organizations like MACC Development with their free block party, which served as a three-day fun celebration that brought the whole community together! Thank you to MACC Development's Antoine D. J., Robin Morgan and board member Leon Stevenson III for your efforts, (and for appearing in this video we made about the event). #FBF #NFLDraft

  • Last week, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the East Warren Public Market, a 10,000 sq. fit. public market designed to promote community engagement. This $5.5M project is supported by investments of several community partners, including a $2M investment from the Gilbert Family Foundation, as well as support from the Strategic Neighborhood Fund and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. The new public market will include a small grocery market, retail spaces for vendors and entrepreneurs, a community gathering space, and a farmer's market, and will also house the offices of the East Warren Development Corporation. We're so excited to see how this engaging new space will transform and elevate public life in the E. Warren Corridor! Learn More: https://bit.ly/4cGb8e5

  • Communities are built in the public square. That's why a core part of our focus is supporting neighborhoods, public art, green spaces and cultural institutions - all of which help build bonds between people and place. Learn more about the impact we made in Detroit in our 2023 annual report:

Yesterday, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the world-class research center for health sciences supported by Henry Ford Health and Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences, which will also house the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute (NGNRI). The research center will focus on closing the gap on health care for people based on race, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. The NGNRI is the first brick-and-mortar institution devoted to researching NF. Detroiters deserve the very best health care, and we are excited to watch this incredible facility come to life.
