🚨BREAKING NEWS: Individuals with Down syndrome are (finally) getting a seat at the table! The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $4 million grant to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to study the long-term safety and efficacy of medicines that treat atopic dermatitis (eczema) and alopecia in people with Down syndrome. These medications have already been approved by the FDA for treatment of eczema and alopecia for adults and adolescents, but they have not been studied specifically in people with DS… Until now! This is a significant development. Individuals with DS often experience an increase in inflammatory skin diseases, like eczema and alopecia, but beyond this, individuals with DS are almost always excluded from clinical trials. At GiGi's, we don't just offer FREE programs inside our Playhouses; we also have programs designed to take our participants out of the Playhouse and into their communities! Recently, our GiGi's Playhouse Hoffman Estates /National Playhouse partnered with a local golf course, the Inverness Golf Club and provided our participants with a series of free golf lessons from their head PGA golf professional! Beyond helping our participants with their golf swing, programs like this get our participants out into the community and help them interact with people who have no ties to Down syndrome! Magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone. At GiGi's, our FREE programs empower our participants and allow them to be confident achievers outside of our Playhouse walls! Mitchell, a participant from our National/Hoffman Estates is a perfect example of this. Mitchell recently participated in the ATHALON GAMES a strength-based race competition that was also a fundraiser for GiGi's. Meet Olivia. Olivia was sophomore in high school, when she stepped in to our GiGi's Playhouse Fort Wayne. She didn't know what she wanted to do or exactly what she was looking for, but she thought volunteering at GiGi's sounded fun. Fast forward three years later, and Olivia was right, Olivia found volunteering at GiGi's so fun, she's still doing it! Only now, Olivia's pursuing a career she's passionate about! Through her time at GiGi's, Olivia discovered something about herself: she loves working with people with disabilities. Olivia's time at GiGi's made her realize she wants to be an occupational therapist. She's now pursuing that dream! Inspired by Olivia's story? Come join us.
