Juneteenth is an annual celebration that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This significant event occurred two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. It officially became a federal holiday in 2021 The Georgia Ports Authority honors Juneteenth, a time to promote unity, inclusivity, and understanding. Today, Juneteenth honors African American freedom and achievement. It is a time for reflection and triumph. Maritime and city leaders gathered at the International Seaman’s House in downtown Savannah to honor the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
